Purolator oil filter N-51

The Ford Lynx runs an oil conditioner, or to us lesser mortals, oil filter. It has a PUROLATOR N-51 cartridge.

The Ford Lynx parts book lists it as number C01A-18697. On the top of the Purolator brand cartridge is the number N-51.

I need one.

Spent hours searching the web for one to no avail, so over to MLU.

Thanks Rick

Try checking for an interchange. What numbers do wix or fram or another dozen different filter manufacturers cross over to. Is it by any chance just a std military filter cartridge? Mostly then, they were bypass filters. How do they compare to other CMP filters?

Phil Waterman 23-01-14 15:20

Do you have acess to older printed cross over catalogs?

Hi Rick

I'll check some of the older filter print catalogs to see if I can come up with a cross over number. All my catalogs are US but will see if anything comes up.

I've found that actual print catalogs have stuff that is not listed on the web, it seems that they just sort of loose the older information when they feed the info into a computer data base. I've also found that it is worth going back through several print catalogs as the data shown in one year maybe different from what is shown in another year or different suppliers catalogs. For years the local NAPA parts dealer that I have been buying from for 30+ years gives me copies of what ever print catalog I want when they get the new ones.

May not go out and look today though, catalogs are out in the loft of the shop and it is currently -17C and not expected to warm up.

Cheers Phil

The part number works out to a Nato stock number (NSN) 2940-00-529-2737. That NSN gives a lot of interchange. Hopefully this link works out:

http://www.dlis.dla.mil/webflis/pub/...2737&newpage=1

If I cross reference one of the numbers from that list, I get a NAPA NGF 1080. This will translate into a WIX 51080. You can also likely get away with the standard 1010 oil filter used on all the fords, although it is slightly larger dimensionally but has a better micron rating.

More information on cross over

Hi Rick

Had to go out to the shop anyway so brought in the filter interchange catalogs. Started with the oldest 1990 looking at Purolator N-15 not listed but they had a Purolator N-1500 that cross referenced over to the what Rob found "NAPA NGF 1080" if you want to check the dimensions and information to compare of the with what you have try this link http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...080_0338264248 on that page you can click Buyers Guide and it will give you a cross to all the vehicles and equipment that uses that filter. I've found this information useful in tracking down sources. Quick look says it was used in a lot of stuff.

Also checked the 2007 NAPA filter catalog and it is showing the same N-1500 with a NAPA number of 1080.

I know the NAPA numbers don't help much but their numbers are the same as Wix with the first number dropped from the Wix 5 is oil filter designation. Just called my local NAPA and they confirm that Wix 51080 and NAPA 1080 are still in the system.

Cost in US dollars is list $25.32 with normal shop discount down to $14.49

Hope this helps.

Cheers Phil

rob love 23-01-14 18:28

Hard to believe they are actually cheaper here in Canada. From my "PROlink site:
List price 20.69
Your Cost 12.29
Unit Each
DC Qty:6 Store:1

This means that my cost is only $12.29, my store actually has one in stock, and there are 6 more at the regional warehouse in Winnipeg.

All this leads me to another question: The Shilo Lynx I worked on has the mk2 style double filter full flow oil filter system like a mk2 carrier. Since yours has the smaller filter, was this on the earlier models of lynx and was it a partial flow only filter?

Lynn Eades 23-01-14 23:26

Rob, Most of those cartridge filters were bypass filters. Another little thing is that some had a little lift out wire handle. There will be a cross over to one with/without the handle (loop) which should offer up another set of numbers.

Rob, Lynn and Phil, I haven't been able to cross reference any as yet so here are some photos showing the sizes. Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Another way maybe?

The filter element you have is quite close to the Military Junior as used on WW2 Jeep and Dodge. The only difference appears to be the length or height of the Junior element which is 4-1/2 inches as against 5 inches for the N-15. Bore/stem diameter and outside diameter are the same.
I believe that the Military Junior element would be perfectly ok to use with a half inch spacer below and they are readily available. They were quite adequate for the 230 Cu In Dodge which is also a bypass setup.
I am using Fleetguard LF 510 on my Dodge 6x6.

Rick,
Here is what you are after. Check the number again on your filter :)

Ok back to the orginal request

Hi All

Rick in your original request yous said "It has a PUROLATOR N-15 cartridge" but the last two post are showing photos of N-51. So would you confirm the number?

Going back to my 1990 Catalog I don't find a N-51 listed but do find a P-51 listed which has a NAPA number of FIL 1100 which should be WIX 51100 here is the link to the NAPA site to the FIL 1100 see if these are closer to what you need. http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...100_0297032254 these numbers look closer to your measurements.

Cheers Phil

Closer than I thought.

Looks like the problem is solved Richard.
The number on Rick's old element appears to be N-51.
Bingo!

Dave

lynx42 24-01-14 22:06

Looks like I need new glasses. I will say that I originally transposed the number in the workshop when it was covered in Black, Black oil. It is N-51 as you can see in the cleaned up photo., Thanks Richard for pointing that out. Seems that we might be able to source one a bit more easily using the correct number.

Regards Rick..

I am trying to find a (near) local source for these filters. I have a NOS one but I want a modern newly made one.

That links results in a message "Access To Website Blocked" for some reason (non-US residents?).

I read the Junior Military Filter cross-references to AC P-115 and Fram C-21. I'll check what the local car parts store can come up with, at least I have the NOS one to compare.

Ford Oil Conditioner elements

Hi Rick,

Just looking at the dimensions of the elements you were seeking and I found these two filter elements when I was chasing them up for my F-15A:

Fleetguard LF510 Length 4.87" Dia 3.97" Hole Dia 0.54"
NAPA1006 Length 5.00" Dia 4.094 " Hole Dia 0.553"
(WIX 51006) Length 5.007" Dia 4.094 " Hole Dia 0.553"

Fleetguard LF 510 are available in Dandenong at Whitehorse Truck Parts and the WIX 41006 are available from Brisbane at Australian Engines.

I bought a WiX 51001 from Australian Engines which has a 5.50" length which matched the original element from my F-15A

I recall a local company in Melbourne that had WIX 51006 elements but I had to get the 51001 from Brisbane. A google search should find the local Melbourne agent for WIX filters.

May have posted this photo before but if not here it is for comparison.
Original F15A- Left, WIX51001- middle and Fleetguard LF 510- right

Hope this is of some help and interest.

Still have the Fleetguard LF510 if anyone wants it.

Cheers,

Thanks Jacques and Hanno for the updating of this 2014 thread. I was successful and the Lynx has a new filter installed.

Thanks for all the input, Jacques and Phil.

But none of the filters you listed are available in Europe. The guy at the local car parts store was very friendly and helpful (he even looked up my truck on the internet), but he could only find cross-references to cross-references leading to one and the same filter - which is too wide.

I contacted Micha Korst of Jeep Dodge parts (http://jeep-dodge-parts.nl/) and he was very helpful and provided both the info and the filter in question: a Bosch P 9170 (order number 1 457 429 170, plus see the picture of the packaging for cross references to other brands).

Attached are some pictures and the product data sheet: Attachment 94182. While it stands 23 mm smaller at 110 mm, the diameter of 98 mm is a good match (2 mm larger). The center tube is 1.5 mm too large at 14 mm (although they all seem to be around the 0.55" mark), but I minimized seepage with a couple of rings.

I am happy to have fitted a new quality product. Will report back after the next oil change.

If anyone finds another (European) match, please report about it here.

HTH,
Hanno

From the US government catoalogue for the mil junior filter, it offers the following manufacturers and their numbers. You will have to do a little research to go from the NSCM to their actual names, but you should recognize the part numbers. The 5 digit number preceeding the part number is the NSCM....:

The reason why I order the MANN PF925X is that is comes with a 11 cm diameter rubber ring which fits in the oil filter housing cover nicely.
