Mystery steering boxes
 

I have several of these ROSS steering boxes in good condition. They have been painted deep bronze green indicating Australian Army use post-war.

Be interested to know what they suit.

There are two different types of steering wheels, one spoked and one solid.

Hi Keith
The solid spoke steering wheel looks as if it is off an Inter truck probably an A series ie, AL, AR .
Inters use Ross steering boxes.

G'day Keith - are the 'boxes identical? The solid bakolite steering wheel looks like that off a White Scout Car...

M3A1 Scout Car?
 

Warren could be right Keith. They may well be White Scout Car steering boxes. The Stude used a Ross box but it has a mounting flange whereas the M3A1 clamps on the sector shaft neck.
Strangely enough I have a Scout Car here that has one of those unusual wire spoked steering wheels on it. The vehicle came out of a childrens playground and had been prepared for that purpose by the army.

Thanks Dave. I remember trying to remove the steering wheel from my scout car - identical to the one above from what I can see - and it had seized on terribly. The bakolite on mine was nowhere near as good as yours Keith and no matter how carefully I tried to get it free - it just disintegrated in my hands, piece by piece until there was only a rusty, wire skeleton of the steering wheel - still seized on. Enter - the hacksaw. Then I tried to find a replacement steering wheel - not so easy. From what I understood - Scout Cars only ever had three spoke steering wheels - some in bakolite and some in painted steel. There were four-spokers in bakolite around - (I can't remember what they were from, perhaps Studebaker?) - and for a make-do effort I got hold of a four-spoker in the style of a weapons carrier's which I'm pretty sure was from a Studey. Eventually, the wonderful Richard Farrant (g'day Richard!) located a steel three-spoker in the UK - ex-Greek army with some Greek lettering scratched into the rim. (The old lady next door is Greek and I've been tempted to get her to translate it - but Gawd knows what it says. She might belt me...)

Many thanks, Jim, Warren and Dave. The ID would make sense given their colour. Anyway they appear to be in excellent mechanical condition although the steering wheels are less than perfect, they sound better than the one you had, Warren!
