Thanks for clearing that up for me. Obviously a legacy from the earlier marks of the Lynx. The Lynx 11 doesn't make use of those eye bolts. I was fortunate to obtain an original installation manual for the Lynx 11 and have been able to source all the appropriate bits and pieces for my antennas.

I now wonder if the eye bolts on the front bins are a similar legacy from when the sand channels were stored on the front of the Lynx. On the Lynx 11 they were stored on the rear of the radiator armour.

Not so sure it is a lynx-1 vs lynx 2 thing, but perhaps a WSno11 vs WS19 set thing. It was the 11 set antenna bases that had the provision for the chain from that eyebolt to the base.

The same bolt can be found on the GM Otters.

I see no trace of those other eyebolts on the bins here at the museum. Perhaps they were an add-on to aid in strapping extra cargo or cam nets when externally stowed. After all, there is no plethora of space inside a lynx.

Thanks for checking the RCA Lynx, the eye bolt on the front of the side bin looked strange and protruded quite far inside the bin and would have hampered storage, don't think that it would have survived long in service.

Still leaves the question of what purpose did the eye bolts serve on the front bin ? They appear on about 50% of the period pictures that I've got.

Guys,

Its a Christmas like feeling every time a parcel arrives from LWD parts. Some NOS Lynx parts that include the elusive "protectoscope". The lens has deteriorated over 70 plus years and will require some TLC. Dry mounted it to test the fit and found it had to be quite a challenge to navigate the Lynx under real life conditions.

I'm quite grateful for individuals such as Dirk Leegwater and Brian Asbury, who had the foresight to buy and store such obscure military components with the hope that someone, someday would actually want these parts.

Crash Pad Production
 

Guys,

I continue to be able to find talented fabricators locally for my Lynx project. Steve Burke of All Canadian Canvasworks in Belleville made 20 new crash pads for me. There appear to be two different styles of the crash pads, one the type on the CWM Lynx 11 and the second which I obtained from Stefan Leegwater. I elected to use the one from LWD as the template.

Now to have the supporting angle iron welded to the crew compartment rim and I'll be one step closer.

Guys,

Received some new to me, period pictures of Lynx 11s in the later months of WW 11. Both Lynx's have field mounted 30 caliber Brownings, interestingly the mounting methods are different to each other. The one picture certainly shows how vulnerable the front storage bin was in service.

Finally found the time to start prepping the Lynx for the upcoming Aquino weekend in Oshawa. I was able to persuade Andy Pomorski to weld on the brackets to mount the crash pads. Only the young and nimble can contort themselves to do what he did. Now to fix up the paint and I should be ready.

Guys,

The Lynx and I had the privilege of chauffeuring Don White a WW 11 veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Dragoons, in a parade honouring our veterans at the recent Aquino weekend. Don was accompanied by Mark Aube, a current member of the RCDs, wearing a WW 11 uniform.

The Aquino weekend at the Ontario Regiment Museum continues to grow and impress each and every year. A must for enthusiasts of heavy green iron.

The Lynx seemed to rise to the occasion and kicked up it's heels to the German re-enactors and sent some dust their way.

Thanks for sharing the pictures of your Lynx, she looks great. The differences between the early Lynx and the Lynx 11 certainly add up.

Your road trips are impressive. My goal is to have my Lynx licensed before the end of the summer, so perhaps we can compare notes.

Thanks for your comments. For all the wrong reasons the Lynx has been quite neglected lately. My son Patrick and his family visited last week and we had to take out and play with the toys.

Fettling

I'm starting to learn the finer details of the English term "fettling". I took the Lynx out for a spin before heading off to the Gatineau Air Show, when I found out that I could no longer engage fourth gear. After several attempts and severe grinding I trundled home in third.

I then attempted to adjust the clutch linkage with no success, I then talked over the problem with Robin Craig, who was able to persuade Gerry Foster to travel from Gananoque to try and resolve the issue.

In short order Gerry was able to determine that the issue was not with the clutch, but the shifter linkage, and zeroed in on the base of the shifter column which was corroded and sloppy. Partially rebuilt by myself.

The shifter column is now out and off for a proper rebuild.

Don't know where I would be without friends and MLU.

I was happy to get Gerry involved, I realise Gatineau had been your goal, shame to miss the event but if your wagon gets properly sorted then I think that may have more merit.

I think things happened a lot faster than your bargained for, you almost seemed shocked at the end of the evening.

Lets hope the shifter gets fettled soon, Thursday night this coming week should be kept open, just in case he gets done by then.

I have dealt with one of those shifters myself. It is very prone to water coming into it from the top, turning the grease inside into mud. The one I dealt with had the bottom worn so bad the rails could turn.

So I was sent some pictures overnight that should once again make Peter quite happy. This is the work and solutions of Gerry Foster, a very talented local mechanic and personal friend.

I am writing what he discussed he would do and explaining it as best as I can.

The shifter assembly had several problems. One was the top spring was not contained and was able to poke out through the upper cap. A washer was domed and then reamed out to size and TIG welded into place and cleaned off.

The shifter rod itself did not index onto the pin in the mouth of the housing, it had way too much play. Gerry and I discussed options, he spoke of milling that out to match a newly made pin that he would make and fasten into the side to tighten it up.

The overall effect will be that the rods for each gear will move in and out as designed and not stay hung up so two gears try to engage at the same time which had led to fourth gear being blocked from engaging.

Personally I think it al looks much tighter and cleaner. I am sure if Gerry is happy with it then Peter will be also.

I would assume Thursday night will be a return trip to Cherry Valley on the County and see this fitted back in and Peter made a happy man.

Shifter fix
 

I had my shifter pull out on the way to the Abbotsford airshow last month.
My problem was the threads on the cap were so worn out they would just let the big cap pop off at a bad time. no fix for the thread so i cut it with a hack saw and used a muffler clamp to hold it tight so it doesn't pop off. I like the idea of a thicker pin so that goes on the todo list and does anybody know a source or application for the big thread on cover?

Preformed the same fix on my Chev 4 speed from the C15A this past winter. The slot and pin were both worn, as well as the hole the pin was fitted into. Milled out the slot to take a new pin in the top of the transmission tower and fitted a new pin with a larger diameter to fit the rewoked hole in the tower . Worked a treat. Things are nice and snug now.
