SDGH - Searching for my grandfather's army buddy

My grandfather - Paul A. Colebank - served in the Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Highlanders during the Second World War. He was usually taciturn about his time in the army. Sadly, he passed away a few years ago. Before he passed away, I was able to request his service files from the Library and Archives Canada.

I have been trying to do some research for the benefit of my family, who are all quite interested in my grandfather's service. The service files have helped, and I have been able to compile a decent amount of information. However, one of my primary goals was to attempt to track down the fate of my grandfather's best army buddy. My grandfather lost contact with him after the war, and despite his best efforts, he did not have the skills or knowledge to track him down. Apparently, I don't either.

The little information I have is gleaned from my grandfather's war journal (filled with names and dates, not diary-style entries) and the regimental history Up the Glens.

- Name: G.W.P. M. Van Brunt
- Service Number: K2790
- Unit: The Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Highlanders

That, plus the fact that they served together in A Company and were both wounded, is all I know.

How can I possibly go about discovering what happened to him?

Hi markruh

Try in British Columbia.

The Regimental number that you provided for Van Brunt (K2790) is within the block assigned to C Squadron, British Columbia Dragoons.

BC Archives, Find-a-Grave, Newspaper archives, etc. You could join Ancestry but that's up to you. Definitely not for me.

Best of luck.

regards
Darrell

Is it possible that you can identify your grandfather in a picture which was made in Hilversum the Netherllands in front of the A.V.R.O.-Studio I ?

Just let me know: e-mail me.

Is there someone who can IDENTIFY a "Glen" by SURNAME ?
