Marsden Matting PSP

Hi Tim,

its struggle to get ONE piece here. I know of a pristine length near my house, It has hung on a fence for all of my days on this earth...I have asked the owners about it. Even wrote a letter... No response. It is getting hard to come by here in Aust, when I was in the Navy 20 years ago, there was a lot of it, It was used extensively around the airfield where I was posted.....today its allllllllllllll gone. As the Bl**Dy scrappers have taken it all. Good luck, I would also name it Perforated Steel Planking as some may not know it as Marsden Matting.

Very interesting. For their page on PSP matting, their description is almost identical to two of the paragraphs I contributed to the Wikipedia entry:

Thanks for the link, I've been looking for a source of Marsden matting so I can hang a couple of lengths from my CMP and there they are, practically in my back yard! Calumet ia about a 3 hour drive from my house in Corinth, Texas. I'll post pics when I've picked some up. Thanks again! Derek.

You are absolutely right.

I am currently negotiating with Calumet for a delivery.

Is there anyone else out there interested in a few pieces or lots of Marsdon, PSP, Martson Matting? Let me know by PM or email. I am putting in an order in the near future.

I received a quote from Calumet of $380.00 for 10 lengths of PSP. Shipping to my address in Corinth was a further $106.00, which is a bit much. I can drive there and back on a tank and a half of gas which at $1.68/gal. works out to about $65.00. I don't need 10 lengths so I'll sell a few to local MV owners to cover my gas costs.

PSP coverage

Hi Guys:

Whats the square foot coverage of a PSP? 10?

I might be interested in a large order to stop our stuff from slowly settling into the Rideau watershed!

Each sheet is 10' long and 16" wide.

Better post some pics from Calumet's site before all their stock gets sold out!

Marsden matting?

Hello group,
How easy or difficult is it to obtain Marsden matting? I am moving in a few weeks and would like some for my workshop.
I have seen it in the recent photos of the Truscott airbase but that is a little out of the way and illegal to remove! I am sounding out at the moment as to the feasibility of acquisition.
I am based in Melbourne Victoria.
cheers
Bill.

Bill

I have seen some of it . Farmers used it . I once spotted some along a fence . One reason it's so scarce is: after the war scrappies went up to the islands and removed litterally tons of it .

In the Solomons , all of the well engineered wartime bridges were torn down by scrappies and sold , instead of leaving them in situ for the locals to use . A friend of mine in his collection has a catalogue printed by a company around 1947 , a sale of items on offer on a island near New Guinea . This mob had bought the whole islands WW2 surplus , airfields , the lot . They even chartered a ship and took potential buyers up to look over the goodies

G'day Bill

I recently bought 8 lengths off an old retired concreting guy who had them stash in his back yard.

These six mats are currently sitting on a building site here in Perth. They are used by the builder to prevent vehicles getting bogged onsite.

Local Chap 24-08-11 16:59

Seems you can still buy it new/surplus from the States.

bill m 25-08-11 02:17

Hello all,
Bob, I am not sure of the standard length but if it is no longer than 10 ft per piece then 2 lengths would satisfy my cravings! Thanks for the info gentlemen.
cheers
Bill

Price quote.

Contacted the US dealer.....asked for a quote on 12 mats. Shipping is from Oklahoma to upper NY state.

"The pierced steel mats are $44.00 each. I can not ship them on UPS because of the size. If I send them by motor freight to a business address in Ogdensburg it would cost an additional $242.00 for a total of $770.00."

Maybe cheaper for you guys in Australia to buy a steamship and pick it up yourself.... shipping would be a killer.

I have asked if there was a magical number of mats that could be more price efficient...ie a bundle.... will post info when received.

Wonder if I asked Santa Claus for Xmas.......

Best deal......

Based on the mats available in the Mid West USA....

,,,,at $44.00 each it is not a bad price....... bringing them to Ottawa would bring the price up to $75.00 each..... and this is at cost..... no profit margin.

The shipping is the big problem.... heavy.... bulky at 10 feet adds another $20.00 each..... then custom PST/GST and the warehouse fee at the border and minimal fuel to bring them to Ottawa.

The owner, Roger, is a rather likeable kind of guy..... he suggested I take a drive down with the wife to see the Oklahoma country side, possibly take in a few tornadoes and he would load me up free. Not sure how many I could load up on the 5 ton float.....hihihi

Now the question......

...... is anybody interested at that price and how many.....

Shipping within Canada would also be expensive....trailering to TO is relatively easy.

..... and will not ship down under..... nothing personal....hahaha

Bob

Jeff Gordon 27-08-11 03:47

hi Bill,
Just out of curiosity what are you using them for.
I have a few sheets here for over 10 years because I thought that they would be handy for something.
So far I have used them for tripping over, hooking what ever I am carrying when I walk past them.

One friend made a bike ramp out of it for his trailer, but it is heavier than the bike.

Cheers
Jeff

Also seen a few sheets turn up at Corowa over the years, they seem to fetch top dollar no matter how twisted and rusty they are, gone well before the official swap on Saturday.
Surprised Colin Jones has not started punching repro's out of his workshop.
Rich.
