21 AFV and 75 AVD
Hi I recently spent a little time doing some research at Bovington and come up with a couple of units locations that they were not able to identify. I'm rather hoping that some one here can set me straight. The locations are 21AFV and also 75AVD, all I can find is references to 21 and 75 BVD. Any help would be appreciated. these are early postwar locations in date.

Hi Nick,
I think that 75 AVD location was at Brackley, Northants. |
Avd
Hi Richard
Thanks for that, would that have been an ADVANCED, ARMOURED or simply 'A' vehicle Depot? I have the name Turweston which is Brakley area, but listed as BVD. I am trying to find out if this was a collecting area for armoured vehicles around 1947/8 with equipment being retrurned from Europe, presumably assessed and the best examples being sent on to Singapore, so could it have been a 'temporary 'A' vehicle depot? There is an airfield at Turweston, that was disused by the military from 1946 (ish). Was that the location of the AVD, or was it on another site? Too many questions I know! kind regards nick |

I knew of 75 BVD at Turweston, but found references to 75 AVD at Brackley in a RAOC old comrades forum, RAOC would have manned these depots. Something just clicked in my memory, and I took a look in John Marchant's book, "Work and play with ex-military vehicles", and he had a sentry box salvaged from an AFV storage depot in 1958 whilst clearing the site. It was 75AVD at Turweston, near Brackley, so one and the same place! regards, Richard |
From one who was there:

Turweston
Hi Richard and Clive
What a great story, thanks for sharing it. So its seems they were one and the same place, it sounds huge and I had never heard its name mentioned before. So reading between the lines it was an 'end of the line storage centre' for unwanted vehicles awaiting disposal and that John Marchant link is a classic, what a memory!! better than mine by miles. I would be interested to know a little more about 21AFV, I have managed to find that 21BVD was at Feltham, were they the same place? There is another code to thow into the pot, that being ORD 13a, I understand that 13 Ordnance company were based at Stöcken Barracks, Hannover, Germany. Same question realy, would the 'a' be armoured?? thanks for helping here, it makes fascinating reading. kind regards nick |

I wonder if 21AFV was the correct designation, perhaps it should have been 21AVD ? Then it might line up with Feltham, which was known as 21BVD. Additional info............75BVD and 72BVD ( Market Harborough), were both sub units of 7 Vehicle Group HQ at Castle Donnington. |
ORD 13a sounds more like a department in a ministry. 13 Ord was 13 Ordnance Company, part of 1 Ordnance Battalion serving 1st Division.
