HI everyone

I just got my headlamps for the Carrier the other day and now I have some questions.

First

On one of the reflectors half of it has been painted black while on the other one it is chrome. Was this do do with black out lights? The half moon blackout covers. How common were they? Ive really only seen them on early CMP's

In the parts manual it shows both the CDN and British lamps having two light sockets. Both of these only have one. Was the second socket and bulb just kept inside the housing as a ready spare or was there a second hole on some reflectors?

Inside the housing where the terminal strip attaches there is 3 letters stamped in the metal. "B G P". Each one of these letters has a corresponding hookup on the terminal strip. What do they stand for. I was thinking that it may be "Both" "Ground" "Power"
On one of the terminal strips there was a wire screwed to left mounting screw. What would this have gone to. Was it for a grounding?

Any help is much appreciated.

I've always seen the second socket on any Cdn headlamps. It was for a small marker size bulb which acted like todays daytime running lights.
All the headlamps I have had that had the blackout hood on them were of the half black type.

What ever you do when you open these headlight buckets cover your nose with a surgical mask..... that B G P.... stands for BLACK GROUND PEPPER.........


Stew do you need reflectors or bulbs???? not to say you are dimlit but........ I may have some NOS in the bottom of my Xmas stocking... next to the clump of coal!!!!!

I wish I had a time machine. Think off all the CMP's and other CDN vehicles i would have. I think one of each should do it. NO on second thought better go for three of each. 1 to keep in mint shape, one to have fun with and one for spares.

Actually the headlamps were really clean. I think the previous owner spent all his free time making sure no dust or Black ground pepper got in them.

I definatly like these Ford headlamps better then the Chevy CMP ones. Im also working on my truck ones at the same time. They have numerous springs and other little finicky parts.

Anyone have suggestions for the rubber gasket that goes between the glass lense and the reflectory. Im going to try a pool supply place later in the week. I need 4 of them. Also does anyone have a spare glass sealed beam lense they would like to sell me? Further to this I need another retainer ring for the Chev headlamps.

Jordan, How about using a strip of cork. Thats whats in my english headlights that I had re- silvered at the electro- platers. They came up like brand new.

Never though of getting the reflectors replated. If I do it will only be for the truck since it will be on the road.

...similar to the alum. paint from CDN tire.... there is a shiny silver paint used by plasyic aircraft modellers that would be even better from the shine/reflection standpoint. I have seenold reflectors repaired with rubber cement (Staples) and HD aluminium foil glue in place.

How different is the UC Ford headlight from the Chevy cab11/12 headlight??????

Price of lens can be crazy.... a few weeks before Xmas a pair of Chevy 1939 lens in original boxes went for $305 US bucks!!!!

Do a regular check off Ebay the range from $12 or 15 to $55 US...
It pays to be informed before bidding.

Jordan Have you considered going with seal beams on the cab13?

I have acquired a dozen or so complete NOS 1942 Chev 1 1/2 ton headlights... complete from lens to wiring pigtails...... not all unpacked yet..... they all have lens, bulbs, reflectors, etc.......BUT.. I am not sure how interchangeable they are with other GM parts.......

I will initiate a detailed new thread with pictures in the next few weeks.......

Having never seen a Chevy 11/12 cab headlight I can't say for sure but they look extremly close.

My UC lamps and the Cab 13 ones both take the same size lense and reflectors. They are interechangable. The CMP ones have 3 little spring clips on them to hold them into the lamp body where as the UC have 2 clips. However both reflectors have the holes for either.

For the CMP I was thinking of going with a Halogen conversion set that fits in the original reflectors. There would be no way to tell by looking at them other then being brighter.

The Chevy 1.5 ton lights you pictured have what apprears to be the same kind of retaining ring and outer ring as what the Cab 13 has. Again I would imagine that they were all the same for parts interchangability.

Rob Clarke will be with me.... we will make a point of taking a part the Chevy lights hown above and compare to the cab 11 headlamps I have...... my cab 11 lgiths were complete but rusted so I do have all the rings, reflectors, bulbs, etc.....

........will take pictures and report back here....

less of a headach for me Jordan, I finally decided I'm doing my uc up as a Mk2 instead of a mk1 , headlites are a problem to expensive each for NOS ones , I'm buying a mk2 Swivil headlamp NOS costing 200 bills, like new, I like lots of crap on the front of my UC, rather than getting the 2 headlamps, can't put stuff in front of those lites. Try using a a cut up rubber innertube as a gasket , i use one on my stelhelm when i go out and play German.:)

parts- and manuals. Only the "Vendors" are diffirent.

Cab 11 vs 1 1/2 ton Chevy headlice...
 

Well I took apart one of the 1 1/2 ton chevy headlights to compare to the Cab 11....vs ...UC... and there are some similarity.

See picture below....... NOS 1 1/2 Chevy has identical lens and reflector bulb arrangement... except the Chevy did not have the small parkinglight bulb installed similar to the cab 11... all wired but no bulb.

The retainer ring... the one that holds the lens in place is only 1/2 inch thick or wide one the cab 11 and 1 inch wide on the 1 1/2 ton chevy.

The refelctors and bulb are in remarkable shape....BUJT.. for the love of God.... I oculd not remove the large bulb from the cab 11 or the 1 1/2 tonner.... I pushed... twisted...puller... swore a little... it moves but could not take it out.....

My other ex UC light has a sealed beam installed... the original ring holding it is also rusted beyond use...

Look at the bucket arrangement on the 1 1/2 ton chevy....

typical modern setup..... well circa 1960 anyways... with springs and beam alignment screws..... reflector polished real nice.

Your picture #2 has both kinds of retainer rings that I have. The smaller is the same kind in my UC lamp whereas the larger is the same that I have for the Cab 13 lamp. None of my reflectors have the hole for the park light but one of the CMP lamps did have it wired.

I have noticed that both your reflectors and mine are identical except for where the sockets plug in as they would be Chev/Ford specific.

I found I needed a third hand to remove the bulb from the Chevy lamp. One to push the socket from the rear, one to hold the reflector and one to twist the bulb out.

I woud say from your photos that the UC mk1 lamps and the Cab11/12 lamps shared a lot of common parts and would be interchanable to a point. But with the Cab 13 trucks it looks like they went back to the civie style lamps as had been used on the cars and truck of the period.

Will need to take a trek to the back field to take a cab 13 headlight apart to see the similarity.

Yep..... lens and reflectors are identical except for the small side light.

Will have to try removing the bulb again.....

The headlight buckets that you have fit the 1941 to 1946 Chev 1/2 ton up to the larger 1 1/2 ton known as the art deco Trucks.
also a close fix is the retaining ring of an M.G.B is very close to the origional C.M.P diameter and fits good.
