Next UCW MkIII project

Hey! I am new here. Recently I was able to buy Carrier MkIII hull. I hope to put it on wheels and restore to running condition with time. I hope that thanks to your help I will get the knowledge that is needed for it. I would like to rebuild the vehicle in the colors of the 15th Poznanski Lancers Regiment (Polish Forces 1943-46).
For start: does anyone know where the hull serial number can be found? No plaque has been preserved ... At MkI * and MkII belonging to my colleagues, we found the numbers without major problems.
I am also looking for parts for Carrier. As you can see, I need everything ...

Hi Adam and welcome to the forum!
I assume that this is a British MkIII carrier (the bed rails tell me it is British)
British carriers had the (brass/ bronze/ gun metal?) ID plate with its TL number (stamped into the plate), riveted to the right front guard. This is your only positive identifyer for a British carrier, unless you can find the T number painted on the hull sides.
British MkIII carriers are not common among carriers, so your is a bit rare.
Assuming it is not an AOP, The only batch of Mk.III Universals was built by Ford (Dagenham- London) and the T number range was T331701 to T334900. Apart from that batch of 3200 carriers, all the other MkIIIs appear to have been Armoured OPs.
This info from Nigel Watsons "Universal Carriers" Vol I.

Your last picture shows a mortar carrier.

Welcome to the carrier forum of MLU.
I gather your welded hull MK-III is of British manufacture, going by the casting marks on the hub. Great! You will not be doing any riveting when you restore the upper armour plates.

The assorted pictures you displayed with carriers associated to the 15th Poznanski Lancers appear to be a mix of riveted hull MK-I's, in desert equipment stowage. Do their Lucas headlamps suggest British manufacture? Are you able to date the images?

The final picture appears to be a British factory production mortar carrier. I say British production based on the double bogie suspension arm design, and factory production indicated by the original MK-I hull upper protection plate bolt holes being riveted closed at the redundant accessory locations. A portion of a six-sided, 3” mortar base plate is visible, along with the factory base plate stowage rack and retaining strap.

Notice the rock placed in front of the single bogie wheel to prevent the carrier rolling forward while the service is being performed?
Field expedient?

Good to see you here on MLU, Adam!

Thank you for the first answers. I dreamed about Mortar Carrier MkI or Mk II, due to the fact that such vehicles were in my regiment. A few years ago, my friend bought MkIII AOP, and later MkI* - he made me an appetite for my own vehicle. Both of his Carrier are being renovated right now. I helped him by collecting documentation. Recently another friend bought MkI* for himself. The vehicle is also already dismantled for refurbishment and we are looking for parts. My MkIII is the fourth in the "family". It will be a difficult project due to the lack of suspension and tracks as well as the drive and steering system. I know that, unfortunately, Mk III was not a carrier for the 3rd "mortar." I still have to rebuild the vehicle as a standard UC with Bren MG.The preserved equipment suggests that the vehicle left the Ford factory in this configuration (a grenade box 2 ", a box on the part to Bren, base for WS19 radio, crew weapon holders, etc.).
There are leftovers of the T 33XXXX number on the side, so I have almost 100% confidence in the manufacturer and the series. I am looking for missing numbers. I hope I find them while cleaning the hull. However, I was hoping that the number of the vehicle was mechanically marked (with a numerator), which would be visible despite the corrosion and destruction of the paint. Unfortunately, the rating plates have been broken. Only their fragments remain.

Yes Adam you are correct, it was originally fitted with the bracket for the 2" mortar.

ajmac 04-01-18 16:23

Adam,
Your MkIII looks to have survived very well, as not much has been cut away to improve civilian usability as is usually the case for the carrier wrecks found today. Where did it spend its retirement?

Adam Bech 04-01-18 18:45

Scandinavia. Everything is well preserved there.

Niels V 04-01-18 21:36

it was used by the army until mid fifties, then served as a Molotov cocktail target until the seventies then the range where was cleared and it ended up in a scrapyard. It what’s saved from here ind the late seventies, and then spent the next decades in the back of a garden. I don’t know when the internal bits and suspension disappeared

Adam Bech 05-01-18 08:54

Thanks for completing the story. :thup2:

RichardT10829 05-01-18 18:23

Welcome to the family Adam, that is a fantastic carrier you have, no riveting to worry about, or air ducts to build.

great stuff !

Richie

Lynn Eades 05-01-18 19:58

Except that he parts are impossible to find, and its hard to find patterns to copy. Most bits you do turn up, are from a Universal MkI* or MkII*.

marcel both 05-01-18 20:12

Hi Adam, welcome to the carrier family and you have a nice carrier to work on.
Hope you will find the missing parts to complete you carrier.
With the help from Petr you will go in the right direction.
Cheers
Marcel

Adam Bech 06-01-18 14:38

I'm count on Petr's help, but also on your suggestions. The Czech MkIII will definitely be a model for me, especially because Petr has done a great job over the years. Maybe somebody has unnecessary parts?

RichardT10829 06-01-18 19:43

track and running gear is obtainable matey..

Paul Dutton 11-01-18 09:15

I might have new old stock drive sprockets in my spares if required.

New wheels

Renovation work is slowly moving. For now, I carefully dismantle the preserved elements and start copying and repairing them. I managed to buy a few more wheels. They are in a surprisingly good condition. Original axes have also been preserved. The wheels are dated to 1944.
Does any of you have accurate drawings of the missing elements of the front armor with their dimensions?

Adam there is a Mk111 at the Tank Museum (about 12-15 miles from where I live) It's was configured with some experimental equipment post war. See the added shafts above the wheels. I can go there at some point and take measurements (with their permission) if you show me precisely what you need.
Out of interest, the motorcycles in the series of pictures you posted are Ariel W/NG's (usually known as Ariel 'Wings') Ron

Tom Millward 05-08-18 19:46

I think there is also a Mk111 in the Tank Museum at Munster in Germany, although nowhere near as complete as the one Ron has pictured in Bovington. I pass Munster about once a Month so could take measurements if you need them.

The Bovington one was in their storage hanger when I went there last year. They said they also have another one on the way from another museum. They didn’t seem terribly happy about it and referred to it as a ‘a pile of junk’! I should have offered to take it off their hands...

Adam Bech 05-08-18 21:48

I would gladly take this problem off their heads ...
The vehicle in the picture appears to be Mk II. The hull is riveted ...
What do I need? At the beginning the dimensions of the armour plates that have been cut from my carrier's hull. Look at the first photos in this thread. I can take the dimensions from Mk I, Mk II or Mk III AOP, but I'm not sure if there are any differences.

Hi Adam,

If you have some dimensions I can take them to Munster and verify them against the vehicle they have there. I will next be going out to Germany in September, but I am generally out there every month.

Come back all I said :o Now that I've found some pictures that I took ages ago. It's a Mk11 at Bovy. Sorry and I'll try better next time. Ron

Adam Bech 05-08-18 22:21

If I'll not solve this problem until September, please help me.

Tom Millward 20-08-18 22:24

Hello Adam,

I will be passing the Munster tank museum on Wednesday, I can drop in and measure the required parts if you can tell me what you need.

Although I have looked at a picture of the Carrier on google and it looks like a riveted hull to me. If you google Munster tank museum carrier, a picture of it comes up.

Regards,

Tom

Tom Millward 20-08-18 22:30

I have just been offered a rear towing spring and hitch which came from a Morris gun tractor, it may fit your Stacey towing attachment, it’s 29 inches long. The guy wants £120 for it if you’re interested?

We move forward slowly. Me and my carrier :)
This year, I managed to get suspension components and tracks. I am still looking for many other details and I hope that at the beginning of the year I will finally be able to start renovating the hull. For now, still more ahead of me than behind me.
I dont know why but I cant add any pohotos in this moment.
