Ford V8 water pump rebuild kits

Chaps,

Any leads on the original twin pulley water pump kits?

Macs have discontinued them I can only find kits for the car (single pulley) type.

Mike Davidson sells new pumps in South Aust, but I would like to fix the originals.

Any leads??

Hi; The early Ford V8 club gets rebuilt pumps from Daryl Fryer in Redlands, CA no internet old style phone only 909 335 1418 Newc in Oregon

Water Pump kits.

Over here I got some from O'Neill about seven years ago and have had no problems with then, if that helps. https://www.oneillvintageford.co.uk

Cheers Stephen

Ford V8 double pulley water pump kits

I believe Ross Prince in Hervey Bay still has them available. I am sure someone here knows his contact details as he has been around for 30 odd years.

Thank you

Thanks, Dave, Stephen and Don for the replies,

Ill do some investigating with those leads.

The single pulley reproduction pumps are relatively inexpensive, and feature the bearing on the shaft and modern seal. I have wondered if it would be possible to make up new pulleys to install in place of the single pulleys, or even if the double pulleys would press onto the repro waterpumps.

double pulley V8 pumps

Hi all; I have to measure, but suspect that the only difference is a longer shaft. Easily fabricated. The Fryer pumps have a new ceramic seal installation and a new improved turbine. Newc

Lynn Eades 14-07-19 12:11

Dave can you tell us about "Fryer"???
Do the old pumps take a modern seal? Can any one make suggestions on seals and impellors? The bearing shouldn't be too hard to source?
Looks like double pulley pumps are not so common any more.

Tony Smith 14-07-19 12:58

If the impellers are still good to re-use, the bearing cassette from a GPW/MB Jeep pump can be used.

He can be contacted on MLU as member "Lendlease".

Water pump rebuild kits

Having just got my Carrier radiator rebuilt (on my first run with the engine covers off it practically gave my passengers a shower!) and pulled the engine out to change the gear linkage, I've noticed that the water pumps are leaking. Whilst the engine is out it would seem the best time to sort them out.

Does anyone know of a source, ideally in the UK, for repair kits for the correct twin pulley water pumps? O'Neil vintage ford stock repair kits, but don't have the twin pulley truck kits, which I presume is needed for the Carrier.

Many thanks,

Tom

Mac's had those kits forever, but don't list them anymore. Personally, when the time comes that I need another pair, I will be buying a pair of the newer single pulley units that are done in the modern style, and making new pulleys for them.

Tom Millward 10-11-19 13:03

Thanks Rob, how would you go about converting the newer type of pump? I take it the pulleys aren’t interchangeable?

Paul Singleton 10-11-19 14:40

Newer Ford water pumps

A good friend has a 1940 Ford sedan with a 221 engine. He purchased the new reproduction water pumps that use a more modern seal and bearing instead of the bronze bushing in the stock pumps. I did note that the shaft size in the original pumps are 1/2” and the new pumps appear to be 5/8”. You could probably bore the original double pulley to fit the reproduction pump.

Tom Millward 10-11-19 15:22

Thanks Paul, that’s very helpful information. I think I’ll get the pumps off the engine and start measuring up.

Lynn Eades 11-11-19 18:23

FYI guys the riveted carrier uses a double sheave water pump that has a sealed bearing in it. In other words, not a bushed pump.
I would like to know what the bearing number is if someone knows.

rob love 11-11-19 18:59

I actually have two of the Mac's rebuild kits out in the shed somewhere. I'll check them for numbers if I can find them.

Tom Millward 11-11-19 23:22

I spoke to Belcher Engineering in the UK today, and unfortunately the repair kits have been on back order for over a year, so no chance of getting a kit anytime soon. They said that they can rebuild the pumps by adapting Jeep rebuild kits, or by adapting one of the newer design of pumps. The latter is likely to be over £100 per pump.

Has anyone had previous experience using Jeep rebuild kits?

rob love 12-11-19 00:19

At work we made the mistake of sending a pair of carrier pumps in for rebuild without asking for an estimate. They came back at over $700 for the pair. £100 each does not seem that bad.

Lynn Eades 12-11-19 05:02

I believe the original seals with the rubber, carbon disc and spring were the same as a Jeep. The Jeep water pump bearing is somewhat larger than the V8 bearing. The part numbers of the two bearings would help. Anyone?

I have used these bearings (see attached PDF) for Jeeps, Amphib Jeeps and my weasel. The part number is FSP61 and they can be machined to size. In the case of both Jeeps and my weasel, I have bored the water pump housing out to accept a 316 Stainless Steel Collar for the carbon seal.

Mike Kelly 12-11-19 11:16

collar

That's a neat mod with the SS collar. Beware of the poor quality universal water pump bearings being sold by various vendors, they only last a short time.

Petr Brezina 12-11-19 16:10

Tom, I have also bought new pair of pumps for my carrier instead of rebuilding the old ones. Much better and easier solution in my opinion.
But Im running single belt/pulleys on it though.

Mike Gurr 12-11-19 19:45

Hi Tom,
I went through the same issues with my pumps. I am currently running with new single pulley pumps. However having heard of the Jeep pump idea I bought a pair of rebuild kits which are currently with my old pumps at a specialist who will be trying to make the conversion. I will update you when / if I get them back.

Tom Millward 14-11-19 11:02

Thanks Petr & Mike, does the single pulley version line up ok with the crank pulley and Dynamo pulley? Do you know if the pulleys can be swapped out, or is the shaft a different length?

Where did you get your new pumps from?

Mike Gurr 14-11-19 22:15

Tom,
Yes the single pulley does line up, the ones I got came from Royal customs in Poole www.royalkustoms.com They work out around £100 each inc the VAT which compares well with rebuild costs even if they are not 'original'. They do at least get you up and running reliably while we try to find the best answer for rebuilding the originals.

Lynn Eades 15-11-19 11:41

I bought Ford parts from a guy who was working for someone else. That business closed down. James has now set up his own business.
His name is James Saccoccio James can supply all the parts for around US$38.00 per pump. (37 to 48 double sheave with bearing cartridge)
He will do his best to keep the post prices down. I believe James is near or in New York. I have found him very helpful.

Maurice Donckers 15-11-19 16:02

I put jeep water pump bearings in my Ford pumps.

Lynn Eades 15-11-19 20:34

Hi Maurice, what brand and bearing number are they please?
