I am wondering if someone would like to guess how this impression was formed?
No reward, outside of bragging rights of being first correct reply, a bonus point awarded for added detail. Clues provided as necessary. Enjoy!

Pierced steel planking?

Dang! You are good, Owen... yes.

Martson matting, pierced plank, PSP, etc etc. Proper WWII era pattern and material.
Wonderful stuff IMHO.

I gather it would be a waist of time for bonus points as what way it was facing? Your image spells that out.

Occasioned during a living history circa 1944 event which turned into circa 1917 Passchendaele, what with off road vehicle traffic on moist ground. Not that I am complaining, just an observation. I know others would be pleased to have some wet weather. By nightfall it changed to snow.

I remember similar conditions at the campsite (!) for the D-Day 50th anniversary (1994) in Normandy, but mercifully we didn't receive the snow. Some of the vehicles struggled with the conditions; no problem at all for the two CMP LAAT's we took across there though! :D

Some photos (not mine) of 'Mud City' here:

Great fun!
