Toolboxes - What are they off??

I've no doubt someone on this forum knows what these are off.

Fellow who owns them said his father said they were off a Blitz.

Certainly not originally for Tonka Toy storage I'm sure.

Over to you lads...

I may be wrong, Tony, but I have been told that they are of Grant and Lee tanks and are comms. boxes or something similar. There are many still being used as letterboxes in the area from Wodonga, Beechworth to Corowa.

Thanks Rick

Very interesting Rick,

Any idea where they might have been mounted? Were they external?

tankbarrell 26-10-18 08:28

They look like they might have been for grousers.

Agree: M3 series tank equipment box. As Rick has said, very common civvie post box in the (much) greater area around Bandiana.

Is this the start of your M3 tank build, Tony??

The British image of the CDL in Rick's post shows the box with a fire extinguisher mounted on the top (that odd round shaped thing on the top).

Fantastic

You Chaps,

Never cease to amaze me... well done.

I concur with your findings. The remanents of the writing on the inside of the lid would indeed seem to suggest grousers were stored in these boxes.

Thankyou to Rick, Adrian, Charlie and Mike for your replies.

My Grandfather, learnt to drive Lee Tanks during the war.
They were being held in reserve (21st Light Horse) and then along came a chap asking for volunteers to go and train at Puckapunyal on tanks. My Grandfather stuck his hand up. Ive got few photo's if anyone is interested.

So you 'never say never' Mike but Ive got a few other projects to finish first.

Maybe we should shift this to the armour forum please moderators..?

Mike, more than happy to post them as long as no-one slaps a copy right on the image.
