Hello
Does anyone have an idea about what is that bracket for? I meen the bracket on the left of the passenger seat of the FAT.

An oil can , a first aid, or.......

cheers
Sylvain

Alex van de Wetering 03-12-15 22:35

Silvain,

I have no idea; I checked the pictures of the FAT I measured and it doesn't have the bracket fitted (currently). My pictures are not clear enough to see if there are any holes or any other remains of the bracket ever being fitted.

here is a bit better picture of the bracket. I have it both my ones.
it is about 6.5"x 6" I have tried to place a one gallon can in it, and the can was very loose in it.

We have that stowage bracket on the Cab 12 CGT here in the Shilo museum. I'll try some of the various artillery related cases like the scope or predictor cases. It will most likely be something on the checklist for the 25 pdr.

Check the seat cover....

It seems to be laced together which is different than anything else I have seen.

Might imply that there was a fabric cover on the bottom section on early models.

Comments??

Thank you all for your aswers,

I am curious to find out what is the use of this bracket, I am just making plans of the floor of my fat , and I am asking myself If ad this bracket or not?
As Neels said the oil can is possible (there is no other bracket for it?)
I think something that the co pilot needs, but what?

Best regards
Sylvain

Hello
I found this picture of a sexton 25pdr , there is an very similar bracket on the left of the gun , but always the same question about the use!

The Funnel?

Maybe the funnel that fits the POW cans.

Here is a couple of picture of the one gallon can in the bracket. I am pretty sure it is not meant to be placed in this.

Harlé Sylvain 05-12-15 12:25

Hello
I think as you Niel, that certainly not for the oil can, but that 's curious there is no place for it.

Harry wath is a POW can?

Sylvain

rob love 05-12-15 15:08

POW stands for petroleum, oil and water. It merely indicates the multi-use of that patttern of a can.

I would agree that the can would not be in that spot. Way too high. It is hard enough getting into a cab 12 gun tractor as it stands without a 12" high barrier standing there.

Jack Stowage??

stowage

Artillery director stowage ?

Who would use the director in the gun team and have it handy ?

Were would the tripod be stowed and who would bring it out ?

rob love 11-12-15 03:30

We have had the discussion before about some of the stowage in the gun tractor that doesn't make sense. There is a spot on the inside of the roof for the plotting board, so that means the tripod for it must be somewhere as well. It's almost like there was no Battery command post.

stowage

Thanks Rob.

The 25 pounder gunsight come in a box about the size of that bracket /holder ,

Maybe the gunsight is stowed in it's box in the FAT in that bracket when in transit ?

WO Aubé are you listening in ?

Maybe you have an idea ?

rob love 11-12-15 03:47

I was thinking the same thing. It is one thing to have all your kit stowed on the shields and trails for a short run, but for the long haul I think you would want to protect them. Otherwise, they will do you no good when you are at the gunline, but the accessories are scattered along the trail.

It would be interesting to find out at what point things like the firing platform would be removed from the gun and stowed on the limber or tractor. Certainly the artillery these days do not leave things like trail spikes, cleaning rods, or aiming posts on the trails of the guns during movement.

Does anyone have an equipment list for a 25pdr and for the Quad, ?

Robert Bergeron 12-12-15 01:16

Thanks CWO, sorry for mispelling your rank.

The Morris Commercial FAT Mk.3 with No.5 type body has a similar bracket on the N/S/F wheel arch for the bottle jack.

Had another look at it today, and realised ours has the original strap still on it. Whatever goes into the holder can't be more than 6 inches high in order for the strap to fit.

I tried the box for the director, but it is nowhere close. I tried the box for the fuze setter, and it comes close but no cigar. The case I have here is a Case, no1 HFS, CM1130A. I have to wonder is an earlier version would have been all leather. Thsi one is dated 1958. A leather one might be a fit. Also, in my experience, the British designed brackets are very tight on their contents.

I'll keep trying.
