Hi all,

I recently read a post here on MLU about modern OEP-220 transmission oil destroying Bronze bushes in our vintage military gearboxes and diffs..

To that end I made time today to drop all the OEP -220 oil that I put into my Gearbox, front and rear differentials & winch last summer (7 months ago) and was alarmed by the amount of bronze “gold leaf” coloured slick effect that came out of my gearbox and winch :ergh: The oil from the diffs seemed ok.

I don’t know if I’ve now destroyed the bushes within the gearbox and winch ... as I don’t know how long the OEP 220 takes to dissolve bronze ... there was certainly a lot of bronze at the bottom of my oil bucket :(

Please check your pride and joys and if necessary change your oil to an appropriate classic oil (I need to research a good oil)

Please see pictures attached .....I hope I haven’t wrecked my bronze bushes!

I prefer Rye Whisky delivered in a short glass, but that is another topic of conversation.

Regarding your oil slick, that is troubling! Have you raised your concerns on any other old truck forums?

Does anyone have a chart which shows the North American crossover for UK oils? I assume from this post we don't want to use modern detergent oils in our Brit vehicles, any help would be appreciated

Most lubricants for manual gearboxes and differentials contain extreme pressure (EP) additives and antiwear additives to cope with the sliding action of hypoid bevel gears. Typical additives include dithiocarbamate derivatives and sulfur-treated organic compounds ("sulfurized hydrocarbons").


EP additives which contain phosphorus/sulfur compounds are corrosive to yellow metals such as the copper and/or brass used in bushings and synchronizers; the GL-1 class of gear oils does not contain any EP additives and thus finds use in applications which contain parts made of yellow metals.
