Korean War M38A1's

I know Frank has started a list of M38A1's and Clive has some on his RamTank Registry.

I was wondering if we can see how many Canadian used 1952/53 M38A1's have a US data plate compared to the CDN1 Data plate.

Canada bought US manufactured M38A1 in 1953 and shipped them directly to Korea. These ones came home in 1955.

They are between CFR 33437 and 33527.

Jason has a US data plated M38A1 53-33136 which is earlier than the list above, which we think could be the sample brought to Canada and assembled here prior to production.

Now we can be proven wrong based on data received.

Eric, that's one of my ex jeeps. I asked many questions regarding the history on this one. A search here under my posts should lead you to all the answers.
Sorry, I've had a few Jeeps and can't remember all the histories, especially on ones not in my current inventory.

My working theory is that Willys M38 and M38A1's that were purchased by Canada tended to have CFR numbers 33XXX (with either a year prefix of 51 for the 10/51 M38's or 53 for the 3/53 M38A1's). Ford M38's generally have a CFR number 52-30XXX to 52-32154 (highest one reported so far) while the Ford M38A1 were 53-3XXXX (lowest so far reported 53-32181, highest reported 53-32908). There are a few exceptions that may have been due to re-issued CFR numbers at the time of Workshop Rebuilds. ......... Brian

So could M38A1CDN1 33173 being unloaded in Norway in this 1970 photograph have been used in Korea some 13 years earlier?

The CFR range between CFR 33437 and 33527 are US produced M38A1's which were used in Korea and shipped back to Canada. They will have the US Data plate on them.

The one Chris use to own, but is now owned by Jason as indicated has the US data plate but is outside the range shipped back from Korea.

The CDN assembled FORD M38A1's as indicated by Brian have a 3xxxx number but will have a Ford of Canada data plate.

Any more us data plated M38A1's with a CDN CRF out there?

The attached photos are from my father's collect. He was with the 25th Canadian Provost Corp and served in Korea from December 1953 to November 1954.

The M38Al's that my Dad used were US models with USA Registration numbers on the hood and CDN replacing the USA markings. Does any know the fate of these vehicles?

I have not see any photos of M38A1's with the 52-31*** markings in Korean photos.

I also have a Korean M38A1. Looking to verify if this unit saw service overseas.
Serial #37460, CFR 53-33481 (stencil and stamped in frame), RREME engine rebuild tag from July 1969, workshop 27. Tie down rings at each U-bolt plate as well as 4 tie downs on side of frame rails. Purchased from original owner who purchased from Shilo Base surplus auction in the mid 70's. Original well used unmodified condition. Spent it's life on a farm. Maybe some info might still be at the Shilo base?

About the only reference to that vehicle in Shilo presently might be a photo of it in the photos held at the museum, or possibly a photo in the base newspaper "Shilo Stag". But both of those would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Any paper documents relating to that era would have been tossed a long long time ago.

Would you know where RCEME workshop 27 was located in 1969?

We have had discussions on this forum before about workshop 27. It was London ON. That doesn't mean that your Jeep was ever there...just that they were rebuilding Jeep engines at that time. In the 70s, it was 202 workshop that was tasked with rebuilding of engines before the military started contracting a lot of it out.

I have seen evidence of engines being rebuilt by individual workshops in the 40s, but by the 60s it seemed to have been mostly centralized. As a workshop, if we needed to any major work on an engine, then it was simply an exchange system, where we would pull the old engine, have a replacement engine form supply, maybe move across various accessories like alternators, and install the new engine into the vehicle. The old engine would get cleaned and tagged, put into the crate, and sent back to supply, where it would get directed to the rebuilder. It was far more efficient than having individual shops try and do rebuilds of the SMP fleet.

I will continue to find out more possible overseas and disposal info on my Jeep. Would be interesting to find based on the CFR number (53-33481) if it is one of the units that was returned to Canada being in the range of CFR's that was posted earlier in this thread. Sn of my Jeep is 37460 Del 1/53.
