Ford front bumper

I was expecting to use an NOS from bumper but discovered that the pre-drilled holes do not match the standard clevis brackets that I am familiar with. The bumper was originally stencilled C111Q-17757 then over-marked C01Q-17757. Photo shows the part numbers, other photo shows hole pattern compared to what to me is a standard Clovis bracket. The Ford 1940-42 Master Parts has detaileded descriptions of the various bumpers but doesn't help me figure why it won't mount on a standard F15A.

This shows the first part number C111Q-17757-A which was over stencilled with a later number C01Q-17757A.

Grant Bowker 05-07-16 18:38

C11Q -17757A and C111Q-17757 both appear in the parts list for the FGT as "Bar - Front Bumper". Manual FGT-01.

There are 5 bumper bars listed:
C01Q-17757 used to serial number 5579
C01Q-17757A used to motor serial 2G-7046-F, will accommodate GM cable takeoff
C01Q-17757B will accommodate cable takeoff bracket and towing attachment bracket (Ford type since GM isn't mentioned?) When stock deleted, supply C111Q-17757
C111Q-17757 used from serial 5580 will accommodate cable takeoff and towing brackets - also has hooks for scotch hawser hooks. When stock depleted supply C29Q-17757.
C29Q-17757 used from serial 104455

Do the "normal" Ford and Chev tow rings use the same bolt pattern? I know the cable guide with integrated tow ring uses a bolt pattern on the bumper that is only slightly different than the standard Chev pattern as we ran into this on Bob Carriere's bumper. (making the holes slightly oversize will accommodate the difference.) The base casting had a GM style part number cast in but that doesn't mean it wasn't also used on Fords.
Is it possible that you have a FGT bumper bar, set up for the winch cable guide and not for the standard Ford tow ring on the left? Does the right side have hole pattern to fit the standard Ford tow ring?

BCA 05-07-16 21:05

Hi Grant, I figured you'd have the books handy. I suspect only the latest model bumper (C29Q-17757) had holes for the familiar clevis brackets (they are listed along with this late bumper in the parts books). I now suspect earlier Fords had no clevis brackets; like the early bumper that I have. It is listed for all early models 15, 30, 60 CWT and G.T. The familiar clevis brackets have a hole pattern 3" wide and 1.5" high. These holes are also used with special spacers to mount the spring bumper bar. My 13 Cab Chev has the same 3" x 1.5" hole pattern for the clevis brackets (but clevis's are horizontal instead of vertical on the Ford) which bolt to frame rail brackets.

BCA 05-07-16 22:01

All is becoming a bit clearer. My NOS bumper is for early Ford that did not have towing clevis's. The later bumpers have holes for the towing clevis's (3" wide by 1.5" high hole pattern, same for both the Ford and Chev). These holes will overlap with some of the extra holes on the my early Ford bumper. As an additional note, while the Ford and Chev clevis brackets have the same bolt pattern, the Ford ones are spaced 22" apart and incorporate the spring bumper bar while the Chev ones are 26-1/2" apart and bolt to brackets on the frame rail. The 2 photos show the difference between the Clovis mounting location on the Ford versus the Chev (both Cab 13)

Just to add to the fun

Hi Guys

The Chevy's changed the orientation of the Tow D Rings pivot axis from vertical to horizontal. This changed the bolt patterns for there mountings. I think the change was a late change probably 1945.

Cheers Phil

Chev C15 and C15A have the pivot running horizontal, (the 'D' hangs down) and on all the other C60S, C60L C60X and FAT have the pivot running vertical, (swinging from side to side). Front and rear on the Lynx have it running horizontal like the C15/C15A.

Regards Rick.

Chevrolets With Winch

Another interesting thing to note is that on late model Chevrolet CMPs equipped with winches, the inner bumper bracket on the LH side was extended and the D-Ring moved inward to accomodate the roller assembly for the winch.

The C15 and C8A were the only ones with them hanging down, the C15A was like all other models.

Brian, I have posted a couple of photos of a bumper I have and it's the same as yours. I have also posted a photo of the bumper Ian refers to and it was something I didn't know. Thanks Ian. :teach:

What was it for???

Hi Barry

Your bumper with the winch fairleads..... what was it intended for? a Chev gun tractor????

Cheers

Barry Churcher 14-07-16 01:06

Bob that bumper is for a 13 cab gun tractor.

That explains......

....the two large hooks intended for the scotches.........

Not only that but it's a Chevrolet bumper (the silver one).

Sorry Keith I should have said Chev, but I was commenting on or clarifying Ian's post where I learned something new. I seem to be forgetting things more than learning and it is probably age related.
Cheers,
Barry

Hello
difficul to find out what is the right bumper Type!
What about this one?

I removed it from a Ford FAT cab12, I dont understand why there is no holes for the big early roller, and the four screw are too wide to fit the late roller, or even fo the towing clevis.
Note that the four screws that hold the spring leaf have a different position on the right and the left, and the towing clevis are not mounted with the leaf spring .

Better to see the pictures

Cheers
Sylvain

The first is on my cab 13 FGT
the second comes from winch equipped Ford - exact type it comes from is unknown.

Harlé Sylvain 06-04-17 20:00

Hello Frantisek
Your second bumper look to be from a late cab 13 LAAT?.

No idea about mine????

Cheers
Sylvain

Bob Carriere 06-04-17 23:35

I agree with Harle

The second bumper could be a LATT or a C60 Chevrolet.

The center engine crank bracket is Chevrolet and so are the two vertical springs of the radiator guard.

Cheers

Bob C

Correction.... it is a Ford bumper with the Ford vertical radiator support bar...... the Chev engine crank bracket is misleading...... Bob C

I am sorry but I would say it's Ford....

Lauren Child 07-04-17 10:06

Is it possible to get a photo of the overall bumper at the beginning of the thread?

The reason for asking is the C291Q.L-W has an extra set of holes in the bumper, and I'm wondering if your bumper does too (being a late FAT bumper).

Edit: Ah, I missed the bit about it being early. It would be interesting to see the pattern though.

Thanks :)
Lauren

We had one of those exact bumpers still in the crate here at the Shilo museum. It was likely one of the parts from Bill Gregg when he gave his collection to the museum. I installed it on a artillery tractor about a year or two back.

Lauren Child 08-04-17 23:07

Thanks Brian! Unfortunately it's a different pattern of holes.

Hello

Can someone tell me if the Two lower holes of the four holes of the hooks or the winch pulley on the fat are in line with the lower bumper monting holes (i have to drill them on my new bumper)

Cheers
Sylvain
