Rest In Peace, Geoff Winnington-Ball

Sally just called and advised that Sunray passed away ~1700 hrs EST today.

Son, daughter and first wife Grace were at the bedside.

Cremation, memorial service to follow.

A quotation keeps coming to my mind..., something like...

No man is an island entire unto himself...He is part of the main...The death of any man diminishes me, therefore ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.

See you Geoff, I'll catch up with you later on.

Richard Coutts-Smith 06-12-10 02:00

Thank you Geoff.

Can't think of any other way of putting it.
Rich.

Bruce Parker (RIP) 06-12-10 02:01

If I know Geoff (and I do), he's even now in some basement with a group of friends, a No.4 rifle in his lap, 'Zulu' playing (though nobody is paying attention as they know it by memory), a box of beer nearby...

Donna...bring Geoff a coffee.

Goodbye Geoff, mee old trout.

Few men can say they had an impact on the world. Our man Geoff's efforts had a global reach that transcended borders and languages. I for one will miss his quick wit, his ability to filter bullsh*t, and his contribution to our worldwide fraternity of military vehicle restorers.

Stand easy, Geoff.

Capt Geoffry Winnington-Ball CD (ret) passed away today at 1500 hrs EST after a battle with pneumonia and kidney failure. Geoff left this world surrounded by his family and in a peaceful sleep. As per Geoff's wishes he will be cremated. The family will hold a memorial service this coming weekend, details to follow. Contact Information will be added to this post to allow people to find out where to send cards and condolences.

Geoff was a founding member of this site [Tank-Net.org] and his own site MLU. His legacy was to foster camaraderie and esprit de corps amongst soldiers both serving and retired and their supporters around the world. Geoff loved his internet family and they it would appear loved him. There are Universal carriers around the world morning the passage of this warrior, who he would tell you was born a generation too late.

Here you will find Geoff and King Sargent enjoying the Norfolk I&I, and I am sure King is with Geoff now squaring the good Capt away on his next tour of duty.

Guys, Geoff was one of our pioneers in the Vehicle Collecting hobby. He ran two sites, both Tank Net and Maple Leaf Up. He will be missed by many.

Farewell, Noble Gent!

Being fairly new to MLU, I sadly did not get opportunity to know Mr Winnington-Ball personally. That being said, I certainly knew of him. I knew of him because he was considered a most knowledgable and eminent military vehicle enthusiast, who was, and still is, held in very high regard by those who knew him, and joined him in his passion for the vehicles that played such an important role in shaping the outcome of conflict and therefore the world.

I feel so terribly sad for the family of Mr Winnington-Ball, and hope they will get some small comfort in the knowledge that we share in their grief, albeit from a distance. With the passing of such a gentleman, I feel a little cheated that I will never have the chance to communicate with him, or hear his thoughts, or ask his advice.

So FAREWELL OLD SOLDIER, the flag is flying at half mast. If I had a Canadian flag it would be flying, but I hope the Australian flag will surfice. After all, we fought side by side, and our countries stood united together. The same way we are now united in grief of your loss.

We were privileged to have Geoff attend the 28th Annual GPA Swim-In and Ex-Military Vehicle Gathering at Corowa in March 2007. Here is a picture taken by Keith Webb. The Committee and members of Khaki Vehicle Enthusiasts Incorporated send our condolences to Geoff's family.

Hi all - what devastating news. We have lost one of our great community leaders. MLU was and still will be the best interactive militaria site going. I know Jif will be watching from on high. Horroo buddy and our condolances.

Just for the memory, a pose with Jif at the 2007 Corowa meet.

My sincere condolances to Geoff's family. He was a true pioneer in setting up his site Maple Leaf Up, and Forum dedicated to military vehicles. He will be missed but his presence will live on.

Geoff,my friend..

Geoff was my friend..
He first contacted me when he set up the MLU web site and his son and I were the first ones to post on the MLU forum...That was many years and memories of good times and :"Gather up's" ago..

My condolences go out to his family..

I believe Winston Churchill once compared all our lives to candles..
We all burn with a bright flame, some brighter than others but we all also eventually go out..
But it is the stub of the candle that is left for others ..some big..some little stubs..
Jif's flame was among the brightest and the stub he left for us,very big... and will go on in his memory in MLU forever.
RIP ,Trooper.

I only just read about Geoff passing away and I am speechless at the loss of a great friend. Yesterday, at the time when Geoff must have been in his last moments, I was given a new CD of my favourite band. I think the song Seventh Heaven sums up what Maple Leaf Up meant for Geoff.

The photo below was the last one I took of Geoff. It shows him next to the De Havilland Tiger Moth DH82C at the Canadian Air and Space Museum, Toronto. This is the type of aircraft his beloved father, Arthur W. Winnington-Ball, was trained to fly on. Indeed Geoff was born a generation too late, but through his work for MLU and 1CACR.org he ensured the achievements of the generation he felt home at are passed on to future generations. Well done, Sir! :salute:

Geoff, vaarwel!

Hanno

Say good bye is so hard

Who would have known when Geoff started MLU and the MLU Forum that followed that he would give so many people from all over Canada and the World such a source of information and enjoyment. The creation of so many friendships, with people we have never met face to face this is what Geoff gave us all.

I sincerely hope that we can keep MLU going, in his memory as his legacy to us. I would truly miss Logging in first thing in the morning to read what my friends from around the world have been up to, and closing my day with a quick catch up.

With a tear my eye Cheers Phil

Sad Day

This is indeed a sad day for Geoff’s immediate family and my thoughts are with them.

It is also a sad day for the MLU family that he created and then nurtured to maturity. The MLU forum is an internationally acknowledged source of information and knowledge not only on the CMP truck but also on Canada’s contribution to world freedom.
I had the pleasure of meeting Geoff on several occasions when he visited the UK,
I shall long treasure our discussions over the finer points of CMP restoration the world and everything while washing the dust of the show field away with a few beers. I would like to think the trucks and carriers that have been restored around the world as a direct result of the help and fellowship provided by MLU is a fitting and lasting tribute to Geoff.

Gone but not forgotten
Pete
