Robinsons of Bookham

You know it's going to be hotly contested when one of the biggest auctions going is being talked about by absolutely NO-ONE! :nono:

Well, I can't make it to the auction, so I can spill the beans.

Reading the mis-descriptions and looking at the pics is enough to whet your appetite, or wet your pants, the choice is yours. Either way, collections like this don't come up very often, and while some items will no doubt fetch a tidy sum, many rare items will be available for near to scrap value. You won't see a sale like this for a while.

and

So, what can you see in the pics that takes your fancy?

Hi Tony,
I have always been fascinated with that place when I have driven past it, so interesting to see exactly what is there. It lists some Scout Cars, I imagine they could be Ferrets. There is a recon Rolls B60 in a crate, could be Ferret or Humber, but looking at the air horn I would guess Ferret.

regards, Richard

I for one will be sorry to see it go - even though it was pretty much inaccessible there was something intriguing and comforting about being able to see one of the last hoards of that sort of stuff sitting there.

Looking at the catalogue there are some excellent examples of mis-naming vis:

9 Armu blitz – English 1485L Model F60L. I think that may refer to the Cab 12 F60L on the fence line.

68 Cletrack recovery vehicle. This one is near the cab 12 and is a Cletrac High Speed Airfield Tractor.

392 What is it?? Sort of speaks for itself really.

With the price of scrap being so low there shouldn't be much competition from that quarter. He may have to pay to have what doesn't sell carted away.

David

Yup!

Thanks for the heads up Tony.
Some of that crap looks like it could have been valuable or useful for parts 40 years ago.

Have they listed the guy's can of bent nails?

I, and others here, have seen so many of these collections, the owners are all the same, and so is the end :salute:

There are at least a dozen of these collections here in WA, saw them when I was in my 20's way back.

The Furphy lids and some of the bigger stationary motors will sell for good money. Thank God (or your choice of deity) for Trendies and yard art.

Best thing for the family to do is push it in a heap and wait for the scrap price to rise. Hell, he waited till all his green stuff turned red and the scrap price will surely rise during the US/China war of 2056.

Thanks for the heads up Tony!

Can't help but think when I see old machinery like that, what bone shakers they must've been, would have shaken the fillings from your teeth. Also what a long way machinery has come, so many exposed belts, cogs and wheels, people must've counted themselves lucky going home with their fingers and limbs!
Don't forget to take the mortein, I'm sure you'll be bringing home plenty of huntsmen, funnel webs and a myriad of other Aussie creepy and crawlies lol.
Hopefully the steam powered stuff goes to good homes.

Ryan 06-08-16 03:04

A smorgasbord of metal.
Would you like rust with that?

Website is saying it will be held over two weekends! Might make it harder for non locals. Hopefully a proper catalogue will be produced splitting the auction up ahead of time.

Just a quick look through the photos and I made a list. It is not complete as I know there is another Humber FV1600 in the shed. I had a good look around about 5 years ago with a young bloke who worked there. I took a few photos but they are hidden away somewhere. Plenty more ex military items which have not been photographed.

So here goes.

Humber FV1600 (Yellow)
Lend Lease CHEV
Jeep x 4
Jeep CJ3 (?)
Jeep trailer x 3
Jeep trailer early or bantam
Austin Champ x 2
Austin Gypsy
Ferret Mk.2
Ferret engine in a crate
Ferret transmission
White Scout Car cut up ex Forestry or SEC
LP2A Bren Gun Carrier looks pretty complete
Universal carrier British or early LP
Cletrac airfield tractor, pretty complete but broken track
Ford F60L Cab 12
Ford 24 stud V8 military engines x 2
IHC Dozer WWII.
DUKW x 2
Wiles cooker 4 wheel trailer
Radar trailer

Unfortunately I can't make it but might ask someone who is going to make a bid or two. So who is going who can put in a bid for me if needed?

Thanks Rick.

I am sure I am not the only one out here that is very curious as to the history of this collection. Is/was the fellow a dealer in iron, a collector or just a little nuts like the rest of us?

Brett Nicholls 06-08-16 23:58

Robinsons

Hi Guys,
Some may already know but....Robinsons are/were a very well known farm machinery traders dealing mainly in secondhand machinery and as old machinery was traded a collection took hold and it was added to over the years and its been there a very long time! :rolleyes

They used to occupy a house/shed which was on the right side(southern) of the site. The house/shed has since been knocked down. The business is now opperated by the two sons which moved accross the road closer to the highway - I guess there was no room on the old site which fronted the old highway.

Regards,

Frank v R 07-08-16 14:41

all I can say is have fun at the sale, you never see piles like that in Ontario any more,

The yard has been there for as long as I can remember and being right alongside highway 31 (Melbourne to Sydney) until the town was bypassed some years ago everyone knew about it.
The main reason the stuff is still there is that the original owner had a reputation for being abusive and difficult to deal with. Most likely because he was abusive and difficult to deal with. To put a kindly spin on it, possibly this was due to him being sick and tired of tyre kickers/time wasters.
Apparently the obstacle has been removed as eventually happens in these cases.
I have too much stuff myself so will not be there.
Sudden thought! Perhaps I'm difficult to deal with?

Haha, might be a good policy David. You and I both have experienced our share of difficult collectors and MV owners to learn from over the years!

Dale Jordan 08-08-16 02:21

Has any one run an eye over the LP2 carrier , what's it like inside ? any motor etc ? amazing that it's been there for that long sitting outside what a shame it was not under cover , has any MLU members try in the past to buy it ?

Auction - military vehicles, Bookham, NSW Australia

Some good, but sad, military vehicles at this Bookham, NSW auction.

pauldavies 16-09-16 11:19

I was at Bookham a few years ago and they wouldn't sell anything, some really good vehicles stored there waiting to die. Bloody shame.
Paul

pauldavies 16-09-16 11:35

I was at the Bookham yard a few years ago with the Austin Champ Club, the green Humber in the shed still has the auction number on it and apart from mice and crap is in remarkably good condition. One of the Ferrets is still looking good inside but outside isn't to bad due to the dry air down in the Yass area. No engine in the carrier from memory and I still have photo's somewhere. They wouldn't sell anything then so someone has passed on to the the great big scrap yard, oh well I hope something gets saved.
Paul

Lynn Eades 16-09-16 12:54

Can anyone do a more accurate id of the "English or LP1 carrier" and report on what is there of it?

Hopefully these photo's will give a better description than my memory of the carrier, not sure were or date of manufacture. Got some of the Humber and Jeep n Champs.

How did the day go? Were the prices high?

jack neville 29-10-16 07:59

Some cheap tractors. I think. But then again I don't know what sort of prices old tractors are expected to bring. The good stuff sells tomorrow

Do we know who bought what?

Ian Fawbert 05-11-16 13:31

Keith,

I hear/was told the following.

-The DUKWS 'complete' and chassis with fronts are coming to Sydney to a guy restoring one already.
-The scout car want to Qld (i heard).
-The C8Ax coming up to Sydney to a well known blitz collector (i heard).
-One of the jeeps (red one for $600) and the bantam trailer headed to Victoria.

No idea where the rest went sorry. I have some more pics of the CMP's and others i will post up too (just need to find time, maybe tomorrow!).

Cheers,
Ian.
