Engine Crank handles
Hi all,
Having begun holidays, my attention has focussed on the blitz a bit more with the aim of ramping up momentum so i can get the motor going- hopefully! So, on that note i have begun to think about crank handles! I thought i had one, but after getting all excited, no, it didnt fit! Damn (well at least the ford anyway, chev i dont know). So now, I have a few questions then- Are there differences between ford and chev crank handles? Are there difference between different models of ford crank handles? i wouldnt think so, but you know, stranger things! Are there early/late crank handles? Is the crank handle the same as any other vehicle? Can someone please post or email me a picture of a ford crank handle (if models specific, correct for a #13 cab, F15A) so i know what to look out for at swapmeets? Finally, does anyone have a spare ford crank handle they would be willing to part with. Thanks, Ian. |

the crankhandles that have come with my trucks have all been different
I strongly suspect that the one pictured in the centre is more likely to be an original the two at the top came with the chevs and the bottom with the ford the ford one is a slightly smaller diameter the chev ones i have will not fit in the ford boss That is just my observation as i am not certain of original specifications hope it helps  |
I used to have one with my KL. God, how I feared that device, and it knew it too. The truck would start, and the handle would spin around and give a whack in the elbow so hard you thought you had lost your arm. After doing the happy dance whilst singing various curses, attention would turn back to the truck which would usually be sitting there purring away, indifferent to all your problems.
My advise: For sure, have on in the collection. But resort to booster cables or tow straps for starting. |

Or get someone else to crank it for you! Just have several cartons of beer handy to repair any bent friendships!

Your story reminded me of an experiece I had with a crank handle.
In 1976 I was on exercise (NZ army, stationed in Singapore, on exercise in Malaysia) I was tasked with looking after a couple of 150 cubic foot fridge units(ex Aust army) which were powered by a twin cylinder, hand cranked (Onan?) Anyhow I cranked one of them up, and the crank handle instead of coming off in my hand, stuck on the shaft. The result was that once it picked up a few revs, it came off the shaft, flew an arc through the air (maybe 30 to 50 feet) and hit a Singaporean bus driver in the head, knocking him to the ground. Fortunately for him, he was O.K. Years later, reflecting on it, I know he was a very lucky guy. The handle was a thick heavy casting, although it hit him on the temple, it was a glancing blow. If he had been a inch to one side,it could have been a lot different. |
I assume that both Ford and Chev crankhandles would have their respective part numbers stamped/cast into the handles? This is the case with my MB and Dodge Wc and Stude. Anyone with a PICTURE would be welcome....you know...PICTURE??? Not stories....

Thanks for the info guys.
Can someone provide more detail though on the differences between ford and chev handles? preferably with the use of photo's! Or more detail on ford handles. As Jack said, any photo's or literature on stampings/casting marks or features would be great! Ian. |
