Blitz/GMC hybrid
1 Attachment(s)
Hi all, had a few hours up my sleeve today so did a little scout. And came across this weird one. The owner believes it to be an army conversion during the war. It's a 6x6 (?) GMC chassis with a Blitz body. Some 2000 were made so the story goes.
But I have my doubts, I've never come across any literature to support this. I think it may be a post war mod by god knows who? What do the experts think? |
Rear

At one stage in it's life, it had a 60ft crane on the rear.

engine

It's powered by a 270cu in straight six. No data plates were to be found on it. Could not see a chassis # where the Blitz's normally have them and I don't know where to look on GMC's. Front left wheel is off an unknown International model truck.

Here's a close up of the rear diff housing. The front one was similar.

c60x
just what i can see it looks like a c60 x
they were powered by a 270 and gm badged diff cover is different to the ones i have seen though I stand to be corrected  |

I don't think so...
The diffs are standard GMC Banjo type as used on the CCKW and CCW. I also have seen a type 13 cab grafted onto a standard CCKW chassis and running gear. Looks bodgy to me...

no expert
Ive never professed to be an expert
Im still learning :salute: |
Post War Conversion. CMP cab onto a standard GMC-CCKW 6X6 chassis. Putting what is a Cab over type cab onto a conventional bonneted chassis would have also meant altering the steering column and converting it to RHD probably. Was it LHD or RHD?
Happy Jack is correct they are standard Banjo type GMC axles. :) |
LHD or RHD?
Thanks for the replies all. Cliff it was RHD with a reversed LHD for the crane.

CCKW blitz cab
1 Attachment(s)
I have wrecked one of these hybrid trucks in the past , it had the CCKW running gear but had a C60X cab ( extended front grill ).
I assumed at the time it was easier to have the two steering positions ie forward and reverse for transport and crane operation by using the bigger blitz cab . The picture shows the use of our field swing crane for loading the front axle on the trailer . Regards Jim S. |
Field Swing Crane
Hi Jim
That image of your swing crane looks interesting. If it is home made could you post a couple of images into my thread of Workshop Innovations in the Restoration Forum? Thanks. Bob |
