900x16 tyres
 

I've got a couple of 101 owners looking for 900x16 tyres for their vehicles in a bar tread pattern.

There seem to be plenty of people with tyre contacts here, so I thought i'd see what tyres people here knew of in that size. preferably in a bar tread.

There are two brands on the market that manufacture 900 x 16, Alliance out of Israel or MDF out of India. Marathon had a supply of the Indian Tyre recently which is a pure non direction bar tread. The Alliance tyre is a grooved NATO bar Tread. Just try your local truck tyre retailer and let him know the brands he should then be able to chase up the importer. I have bought both brands in the last couple of years though stock holdings can vary at the importers pending demand for a product line.

Antique tyres can get firestone NDT's in the size as well as those two apparently, about $430 a tyre. Be interesting to see where the others stack up.

Search for "MRF" on this forum and a multitude of useful threads will show up.

Mind you, MRF has 9.00-16 tyres in both American and British sizes. For post-war British vehicles, make sure you get the type which fits the 6.5" wide rims instead of the wartime 6" wide rims.

I suggest you contact the MRF importers ,Agtyres in Moree, NSW . I bought my 9.00-13's direct from them , saved myself some money - No 3rd party dealers involved . They arranged delivery too .... it was about 4 years ago, so things may have changed since then.

The MRF 900X16 tyres on my Dodge Carryall now have over 6,000km on them. There is no discernable wear at all. They are very springy rubber and have much better grip on a sealed road than my previous Goodyear and Firestone tyres.

They have done about 500km on hard gravel road and no nicks or cuts.

We took the vehicle to Fraser Island last Easter and ran about on the sand with 12psi for a week including lots of 60-70kph running on the beach with no ill-effect.

At less than the cost of a tyre for my Toyota Landcruiser - and they come complete with tubes and rust flap - I will certainly not be going back to European or American brands.

Forgot while I was at it. The MRF catalogue shows two of the elusive 900X13. The heavy tread would be fine for the small blitz - looks a bit like current NATO. The straight grooved one could be made into the perfect copy of the desert sand tyre by spending a few evenings with a grooving tool putting on a diamond pattern although I do recall seeing a photo of a WOT with that straight aircraft type pattern.

They are not just agricultural tyres they are highway rated.
