Wd Metallic Containers

Hi, Is there anyone who can tell me what there was normally inside this kind of metallic containers ? Both are dated WD 1940 and has a different manufacturer. One is made by UTTLEY INGHAM & Co LTD and the other by BULPITT & SONS LTD - BIRMINGHAM. |
This is only a pure guess, but could they have been containers for air-drops over troop formations or clandestine operations?

They look like WW2 british containers for artillery rounds...
Is their any padding inside to take a optical range finder or similar.
A friend of mine owns exactly the same container. There is still a visible sign on the lid saying Czechoslovak HQ it means that it was used by the Czechoslovak Armoured Brigade Group. Apparently these shoud be british map containers.
We used these in an Army reserve artillery unit I was in when I was 17 (way back in the 60's). They are map containers - but they will hold 8 cans of beer with finely crushed ice..
