looking for reference for Recce carrier
I'm speaking with a friend in our Legion branch, who was a member of the Canadian VIII (8th) Recce Regt. because I was asked to assemble a Staghound kit for a Sask museum, he tells me that they never used them in WW2, but that they used Bren Carriers (his words), that they had regular carriers, and "Anti-tank" carriers.
I might try to build up the anti-tank version if I could find anything of a reference to such a designation, all he's told me so far is that it may have been a bit heavier and faster, but not a great deal. Anti-tank armament seems to be referring to Piat(s?). I don't want to press this veteran too much for info, as he is one of the quiet vets, but if I can get him interested over tea (or a beer if th' missus lets him out), maybe memories will come clearer. Anyone have some knowledge of a Recce Regt. A.T. carrier? Thanks for any help! Bruce :support:remember |
Anti-Tank Platoon
Recce Regiments had an antitank platoon of carriers that pull 6# guns. Could be a Windsor, T-16 or a standard carrier with a hitch.

6pdr. makes sense,
Just after I posted my question, I thought to check my Osprey book on the Universal Carrier :rolleyes, near the back is a pic of a carrier towing a 6 pdr. and I thought "this makes sense", I guess it's just hopeful thinking that it might be something really different, like more armour and a something like a golf bag full of PIAT's :thup2:
Maybe next time :whinge Bruce :support:remember |
They "traded" with the Americans for .5o cals and mounted these on the carriers, maybe this is what he was referring to? Brian

Probably not that exciting,
I just had a moment to try question him about the weapons on the carrier, so anything's possible so far I guess, but PIAT was the only thing he mentioned, I think if they had M-2's on the carrier that would be the first thing he would have thought of, but you never know.
Maybe it had a Boyes AT rifle ;) Thanks Brian, and Ken. BG |
And then there's.....
1 Attachment(s)
.... this fascinating field-expedient experiment.... :D

That might not be the one I'm looking for, but thanks for putting that out there Geoff :)
Sort of a PIAT version of a Pepperbox, I wonder if one could hit a target with that? BG |
