Yukon CMP
 

I am one of the directors with the Yukon Transportation Museum. We have in our collection a GM manufactured Canadian Military Pattern truck model C-60S-T, cab model 13, manufactured March 20, 1945. Are copies of manufacturing drawings or diagrams, or line drawings, available for our vehicle? Is there an archive that would provide usage and disposal information for our particular vehicle?

I would like to build as much file information as possible and produce a cardstock model for sale in our Museum gift shop. Any assistance would be appreciated.

As a long time collector of CMPs and CMP information may I humbly say that in coming to MLU Forum have probably come to the largest collective source of CMP information available anywhere.

As to your questions concerning drawing etc I expect that you will soon be hearing from many sources.

Actual specific vehicle information other than unit markings found on the vehicle is exceedingly rare. Given a March 1945 build date it is highly probable that your particular CMP never left Canada, in fact it may never have even been issued to a military unit. Never the less that doesn't detract from its historical interest. From the pictures it appears to be in relative good condition. As you explore MLU and the websites that varrious members of our Forum have you will see that many CMPs that have been restored started the process in far worse condition.

Hello Mr. Waterman. Thanks for the welcome and comments. The pictures are great. It seems our CMP worked as a service vehicle for the Canadian Military Control of the Alcan Highway. Any additional info for our files will be most welcome.

My project is to find drawings for development of a cardstock model which seems to be popular with many of the military modellers. Any assistance in that direction will also be appreciated. I don't know if many of the people on the thread are model builders (maybe no extra time if you have a CMP to restore and drive) - would there be any interest in a modellers section?

John, I can decode the Build Plate (the General Motors of Canada one) if it's there. I did several brief backgrounds for a recent exhibition in England, that included a Willys Jeep. How on earth I did a potted history about Jeeps in two paragraphs to go on an A4 laminated card I shall never know!

We at ROADSCENE magazine are just about to start off a new series about the development of the CMPs based on Canadian information, then the British side of things post-1940. The magazine will be distributed in Canada. This will precede a book / books on the subject.

Hi Guys

Refreash my memory wasn't there a tread about CMP tractors a while back? I've tried to search for it but I can't remember what the heading was, each of my searches either gives 0 results or to many results.

I seem to remember at some point someone posted a picture of a CMP tractor hauling logs which might be appropriate to the current question. I also remember seeing some where either on MLU or one of the other CMP sites a picture of the 5th wheel.

John you might also want to check the Australian Archives photos http://www.awm.gov.au/visit/?item=mustsee&sub=post45 there are deffinitly pictures of the truck and trailer unit. Perhaps one our crew who is very familiar with that site could point us to the correct picture.

Here is the only image (a Ford) I've found so far of what I think we are talking about this is from Bart Vanderveen's The Observer's Fighting Vehicles Directory WWII 1972. I believe there was also an article in Wheels and Tracks.

I have a number of books on the Alcan printed at different times that I will reivew to see if I can find anything that might be of interest.

Phil this one was not a purpose built tractor as such as it is the short wheelbase truck. I think the 'T' in this case stands for 'tipper' as the tractors had an even shorter wheelbase then the 'short' versions. :)

The tractor version was made only by Ford and was the F60T on a unique 115" wheelbase.

So it would seem that what is being looked for is information on the dumb truck (tipper) version. Well in that case Bill Greggs books are probably going to provide the drawing information that John is looking for.

Hello all. After taking another look at my pictures, yep, there it is on a little plate beside the ID plate - model dump 4. T for tipper :D.

David, I have attached a photo of the plate if you can give any further info from that.

I am going to be in Ottawa for a meeting next week and will see if I can get a copy of Mr. Gregg's book at the War Museum, or some further info there if there is time.

Can anyone tell me about the wheel hub plates? I haven't seen a picture of wheel hubs like this and was wondering if they served some particular purpose or were they added later?

John they are typical late model wheels with the lifting sling hubs attached. That is where the vehicle was lifted by sling to put on board a boat or similar. :)

Gregg's books are out of print.

Body... -DUMP-4 so I assume that it was originally a dump truck?

MODEL C60S ..not seen C60S-T before! I HAVE TO ADD that any in the UK were ready fodder post-war for the refurb companies as tippers were essential for post-war rebuilding when there were no, say, Bedfords available.

CAB 13 ...third type closed cab with reverse-slope windshield
1944 model Chevrolet C60S sequential production number 9380, which is unique in my database!
ENGINE # PR [right hand drive 216 cu in] number 4026485
CONTRACT C.D.L.V. 3525 so a late war one!

Very interesting indeed! I have no data on any other C60S lorries as late as this.
