Carrier, 3 inch mortar T83628
2 Attachment(s)
Hi all,
I am a new member of this forum, and have just started a restoration of a 3" mortar carrier her in Dunedin, New Zealand. I thought some people might be interested to see that another carrier is being restored in the South Island. Purchased 5 or 6 years ago, the carrier has suffered the usual fate of having the upper plating removed, and most of the interior components. I have just blasted and primed the hull, and fortunately the tracks are mostly free, and all of the wheels look OK. I have recently picked up a suitable motor/gearbox, so the fun begins! Just for the record, I also own several C8aX chevs, with one restoration underway, a CCKW, a 57 Daimler ferret, and a few other useful projects. I look forward to meeting other members of the forum, and sharing our experiences of restoring carriers and other vehicles. Kind regards, Mark Cameron |
Hi Mark
Great to see you here on the forum.
Nigel's book has got you going,.. has it? Do you know how to do a P.M. (personal message) If so, send me your ph. number please. I'll be in Dunners next weekend, and have a very small window of opportunity. Lynn. |
3 inch morter
Hi Mark,
And welcome to the Forum, I will look forward to watching your progress on your carrier, there are plenty of people here with a vast amount of knowledge that they are willing to share, Regards, Ron |
Welcome
You've come to the right place!
And if you could please post any data plate details of your C8AX collection that would be very welcome too. |

I have 1 chassis nearly restored in my garage, but can't find a number on the chassis anywhere...any ideas?
Another one I have is "old rusty" a PJ that used to take families on beach rides at Brighton I understand. As you can imagine, the body is not in the best of health, but it is still intact (less the deck) and may be restored or donate parts someday. The chassis number on the brass makers plate on the dash is XH8448-332, dated 5/4/43, with an order number of 2394. That leaves 2 more to identify. If anyone knows where to look on the chassis for the number, I would be very interested. Kind regards, Mark Cameron |
Chassis numbers
Hi Mark
I've had PJs since the early 80's. As far as I know, the data plate on the dash is the only place where the build number (chassis number) is recorded. Waiouru museum has a database printout of NZ fleet numbers, but that does not include chassis or engine numbers. Rob Gisborne NZ |
3" Mortar Carrier
My dad restored one of these "back in the day", well 1980s, and subsequently sold it to another forum member, Dave Hardway. Are you in the NZMVCC? Fire any questions you have at us and we'll see if we can help!
