We got some great news the other day, the previous owner of our carrier managed to dig out a photo of when he obtained it in 1979 still showing the serial number & the original brass data plate off our carrier showing the same number. We believe the number T33286 makes it a 1941 Universal Mk1 made by Nuffield/Wolseley? Have also included some photos of progress so far. We should have the motor back together and siting in place soon. Getting closer every day! Does anyone know what the " /L/ " stands for at the end of the model designation on the data plate?

Have also included a couple of photos of carriers in service with the New Zealand forces serving in Italy, showing the patterns and markings our carrier will be finished in.

I like the way both these carriers have been 'field-fitted'... :)

BTW, what's the machine gun mounted on the rear of the first carrier? Haven't had my coffee yet, which means the circuitry between my eyes and brain is malfunctioning... :confused

Looks like a 7.92mm BESA :no4:

Hi Guys
I've got a similar carrier under restoration here in Nelson. I see you have your lights fitted, would it be possible to give me the dimensions of them, dia, distance front to back etc, and if possible a close up photo. Regards, Brian

Ross has another plate with a number only a few before ours, that makes at least 3 from that contract here. Will get some headlight photo's & measurements this weekend. Any other NZ Mk1's with similar numbers out there?

Rob Beale 19-06-08 10:18

Here in Gisborne,

we have T80068, which is in the same batch as Dave's 3" mortar carrier.

Progress on your carrier is impressive guys. Looking forward to seeing it mobile.

Rob

I have carrier T84089, plus brass plaque T83601, there’s a guy just out of Christchurch with carrier T83622. All three (3” Mortar Carriers) come from the same contract. He also has a brass plaque with T80900.
It would seem a number of the English Carriers that came to NZ are from one of three contracts.
I'd like to attach some images but I don't understand (please enter the URL of your image) what do I need to do, can anyone help.

Regards, Brian

I love it! I produce it when someone tells me what colour Khaki should be. :teach:

Rob Beale 24-06-08 07:06

Just for the record,

I first found the colour in the 80's in a Dulux fleet colours chart. It was called "Army Olive". Over the years I have had it re-matched as the paint formulations have changed. Currently I have an Ameron formula.

David Ellery and other Kiwis have it now too, so we are achieving some standardisation of the NZ LP2 carrier fleet!

I must have deleted a post yesterday, but Tony's pic has 8 of the 10 carriers present that day in 2003. An LP2A and a MkI were to the left of the nearest carrier.

Hi Guys, Is this 'Portland Stone' you have painted your carrier in?.

kev.

McDell Bros 20-11-12 10:13

Hi Kev, no the scheme is supposed to be "Light mud/ blue black disruptive scheme" from early on in the Italian campaign. Colour matches and information were a bit scarce so who knows how close it is but we think it looks good and a bit different. Cheers Chris

RichardT10829 20-11-12 16:39

Kev i have the italy scheme book if you need it... the first image of the war time pics (in post #2) imho is desert stone with a black / brown disrupive... going off the building behind it which will either be white or light stone ;) basically its the scheme i have chosen for my carrier too.... from my readings many carriers painted in the scheme had served in North africa and sicily (Op Husky) prior to Italy (Op Avalanche).

I love the light mud scheme too which was my fall back scheme to keep in with my grandads timeline..

I used to own a 3" Mortar carrier W.D.NO T80874. I still have the brass plate. I bought this one in 1977 for $30.00 and drove it home. We had a lot of fun with it. I swapped bits off it to get parts for my LP2A and gave the rest to a chap in the Wairarapa where it still rests/rusts. It hasn't moved for at least 20 years a real shame.
