300Watt charging set Canadian

Hello everybody.
I don't know if anybody will know(but from having read this forum for a good while, I think somebody will), but I'm after some technical information and history about these charging sets please (is an online source asking too much?). I got one with a slightly damaged spark plug and bent frame and want to get it back in shape.
Cheers.

Are you referring to the chorehorse charging set mfg by Johnson? WW2 vintage? If so, contact me by PM, may have a manual for you.

300W charger

If what you're referring to is the Generator Set, Gasoline Engine, PU-5008/U (Modified Johnson Model CHI-395-6), I, too, may be able to help.

This little beauty, 300 W, 30 V, 10 A, runs like a dream when it's properly maintained. Was used in the Canadian Forces to charge a bank of 80 AHC batteries whilst another bank was on duty running communication equipment in the field.

As far as sorting out the bent frame is concerned, you're on your own. Apply sweat and tears to metal...no blood, please...doesn't look good mixed with the grease.

I have a spare NOS spark(ing) plug, however, you are over there, and I am over here.

I've just double checked and it said "Charging set 300W Mk1, mod no CH1-395-5" it's 15V 20A output and made by "Outboard Marine and manufacturing company of Canada"(is this Johnson?).
It should straighten out quiet nicely with a bit of heat, and as for the spark plug, it's another thing to add to my Beltring list.
Thanks for the advice.

Johnson/OMC

Dougie:

Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) was contracted to purpose build these modified generators originally made by Johnson.

Jon,
Johnson actually joined the Outboard Marine Corp. in 1936, so it is one and the same company really.

Is that a Plessey ATU for an RS C42 set that I see?

Got any other bits and pieces?

Rob, you can email Nick through the system by clicking on his Profile button at the bottom of each post, and then on the email link. It's a safety feature we use in order not to expose individual email addresses to potential spammers.

I thought it was a clansman ATU (Racal) - I pinched the picture from a web site, as I haven't got round to taking a picture of one of mine. I've got an Ex british army FFR landrover that I'm fitting with clansman gear(Johnsons of Leed's seem to be the best source in the UK). I've got the corpse of a C13 with it's harness and a couple of other larkspur radio's with no harness and a R107 and a canadian 19 set. Unfortunately only my clansman set work's, the other's need repairs to greater or lesser extents. (the 107 should be the easiest, as it was working when I got it). I'm a bit of a magpie I can't resist military radio gear (or any intresting military gear for that matter-Paticularly wartiime)
I would love to get either a wartime fat or radio truck, but storage always seem's to be the major problem.
Actually can anyone reading this suggest any good web sites that show the radio gear in situ? There's been some lovely pictures on this forum of the vehicles themselves, but they always look a bit bare inside. The royal signals museum at blandford camp have a lovely armoured command vehicle, but I couldn't sneek it out under my coat. There's no pictures of it on the web site, it's worth a quick browse anyway if your a radio fan ( http://www.royalsignals.army.org.uk/default.htm )

Vintage radio info

Geographically speaking, right around the corner from you, the following text is a "must have" for collectors of stuff that you and I have:

Wireless for the Warrior, A technical history of radio communication equipment in the British Army (including huge section on Cdn WS No 19).

Standard sets of World War II

Author: Louis Meulstee

A Radio Bygones publication

GC Arnold Partners
9 Wetherby Close, Broadstone
Dorset, BH18 8JB, England

ISBN 1898805 10 5

I'd recommend that you consider Vol 2 to start with. Expensive, but, as an Australian copy holder said..."Worth every Pommy pound".

Speaking of Clansman, see next separate post.

dougiebarder 22-12-03 00:24

Yep-got that.
It is THE book to have(vol's 1-3) It just makes me want to buy more and more gear. The only thing it hasn't got is nice colour pictures, but I think they would spoil the look of it anyway. (and it shows the canadian charging set's, but there the only thing in there without all the facts and history)
