Lincoln V12
On YouTube
Hope they had some ventilation in that shed... Now to shoe-horn it into a F60H Cab 12. |
But..
As you know Keith, a rhd Lincoln Zephyr V-12 was installed in a F60H and demo'd, as Ford's answer to the requirement for more power in the 6-wheel chassis class. Ford also offered a 'F60X' but the DND elected for a GM version insyead with the 270 GMC unit although it was acknowledged that it too lacked power. I have never seen anything though about the Chrysler straight-eight C60X. That would have been a possible answer to the lack of power question!
I found this link which is interesting. I had forgotten about the mighty GMC V-12 diesel. It rather sounds like a diesel loco engine. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=puJaDf...eature=related |
It's not all about cylinders and cubic capacity
The GMC 270 might be down on ultimate power, but having been around a few of these engines for a while I'd elect to have the 270 over any other option. ( I had the 270 in my DUKW, my CCKW, and my Chevrolet 1.5 ton
True, it's only a 270 six cylinder, but you can't kill them with a stick, and a big stick at that. Don't forget how many of those engine options you mention are overhead valve, as opposed to those blooming side valve things. Full pressure oiling (unlike the Chev) and six cylinders are easier to wire and maintain than twelve, and if you need bits there were plenty around. I love my side valve Dodge / Chrysler sixes dearly, but not even the longer and larger Chrysler sixes would tempt me away from the 270 as an engine option. |
