Chevrolet 15cwt

Hello to everyone.
I'm new on this forum.
i found this forum because I was doing some research on chevrolet' 15cwt in German colours.
I have found quite a few photo's on this site, but none of the type I am interested in.
As my screen-name may explain, I do a lot of scalemodelling.
My interest goes out to british (and canadian) and american vehicles in German service.
I found the thread on Beute-fahrzeuge but no picture on the type I'm looking for.
It's the type with the front window facing outward (the top-part)
I believe they call it a type 13 cab.
(please correct me if wrong)
Hopefully you are able to help me. :salute:

Hi Scale Modeller. We are a friendly bunch here and it would help to get to know you better if you had a name and location....

Anyhow, the Beute-fahrzeuge (aka Umbau-Wagen) thread concerns mainly Commonwealth vehicles that were significantly altered or rebuilt in German service, often receiving a new German name or classification, and appearing in many respects quite different from the original vehicle.

The Under new management thread however looks at standard vehicles that have been "acquired" by the Germans and only received cursory changes, often only limited to markings or paint. Is that the thread you're looking for?

Hello Tony,

Sorry, but my name is Barry.

The "under new management link" is kind of what I was looking for, thank you for that one.
The picture you put in your reply is the pre-decessor of the type I am looking for. (I believe... :confused)
If you follow this link you will see the type I mean, it's the first picture of the 15cwt version in the list.

Hi Barry. The photo Tony put up is the same type of truck (but probably a 30cwt) as the 15cwt you want except the Germans removed the cab roof and windscreen. I guess you are doing a conversion of the Italeri 15cwt Chev model kit?

All the 13 cab 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel drive had the same cab and interior except for extra levers when fitted with a winch. The main differences were minor between Chev and Ford rather then between different sizes of the same make.

You have to decide whether to go all out on a rebuilt captured truck in German service or a captured and used on the battle field type which did not have major changes made. :teach:

The picture

The pic Tony posted looks more like a cab 11 Ford F15...

It's interesting to see most of the captured CMPs are 11/12 pattern.

That will teach me to look a bit closer in future. :giveup

Here's the only pic of a Cab 13 under new management that I could come up with. I assumed that it was an original pic but am unsure.

Yes, that is the model kit I´m attempting to convert.
But do you know if there are any photo´s of a captured Chevy like the model I mentioned before?
Because i´ve looked at all the pictures in both threads you mentioned, and there are lot´s of 11 and 12 cabs but none of the short-nosed type 13.
Or were they manufactured after the german troops were defeated for the best part? ( I mean the DAK.)

scale-modeller 05-01-09 20:29

Thank you very much Cletrac.
I just came across a photo of a type 13 cab, that was is australian use but that still had two german black-out lights on the fenders.
So it looks as if has been in German hands but there is no further evidence in the photo to support that.

In the early stages of the war the Commonwealth troops had mainly 11/12 cab CMP's and the Germans were more often then not the winning side at this stage. So there fore it stands to reason that a lot of 11/12 cabs were captured by the Germans. Later in the war when 13 cab's were issued in large numbers the Allies were the winning side so it stands to reason that not many 13 cab CMP's would have been captured compared with 11/12 cabs and those that were probably were used in their original Allied configuration except for the German Crosses on the doors and perhaps a german flag drapped over the roof as there would not be time to reconfigure the vehicle too much as the DAK were in retreat and lost all their vehicle stocks in the end anyway.

The pic I posted is a 15 cwt and has the lifting rings on the hubs and no roof hatch so is likely a 45 model. The 13 cabs came out in 42 so could have ended up in German hands (and likely did) anytime after mid 1942. The allies didn't lose so many vehicles en masse after this time so that's why most of the new management trucks are cab 11 and 12 models. Think fall of Greece and fall of France for the en masse losses which were several hundred or more at a time.

do you have any reference as to what unit this vehicle belonged to?
BEcause then I could try and find out what unit sings I would need to retrieve from my other kits ( or be very creative with a brush :D)
But these are the pics I´m looking for :note:

That explains a lot in why there are not that many pictures around of the type I am looking for.
Thank you for shedding some light on this subject. :)

Note that both of the trucks have sand tires and not bar grips in the desert.

Thank you Keith,

Great photo!!

But what is the contraption they put up in the back of the chevy?
It looks to me like it's something of a workshop-conversion of some kind.
Or some sort of a generator??

Thanks for pointing out this detail, Cletrac.
And what are the sizes of the tires on these trucks?
(And if anybody knows who produces these tires, or has a model that includes these tires in 1/35 scale, please feel free.... :D)

Looks like some sort of makeshift workshop conversion.

Tyres would be 10.50-20.
