What is this?

OK, I hear you say... it's a Jeep... but I mean the vehicle behind it... The picture was taken in 1943 in Port Moresby, and is one of several images (more to come) sent to me by Michael Claringbould who is an aircraft historian based in New Guinea. Interesting field mod on the Jeep too. |

Truck, 7½ ton, 6x6 Wrecker, C2 More specfically, a Reo 29XS. |
Thought it was something like that.
Thanks for the ID, Hanno.

Sure it's a Reo, Hanno?
The 'popular' truck in this class was the Federal 604 aircraft wrecker, basically an aircraft crane truck with a fifth wheel for a big recovery trailer. There's a nice example at Duxford. Biederman did a similar fuel tank hauler, and I think the basic style was produced by several companies.
Ash-framed cab, the lumps you can see on the front bumper are air-filled shocks. Gordon |
You can see it here...

You'll have to click and drag the view round to the right, then zoom in. It's sitting behind the starboard wing of the B17 Gordon |
Duxford Truck.
Hi Gordon
The truck which was at Duxford was sold last year to (I think) a collector in Holland.I know the asking price was about £2000.it was very original and only needed a little work to make a very nice, rare vehicle.it's a shame the IWM didn't keep it as the type mainly served with the Eighth air force. Biederman
Anyone by chance have any info on Biederman Trucks????
Have googled and search and googled again, but is like zip and zero to find.... Chers Rolf |
Based on Observers Fighting Vehicles Directory 1969 edition pg. 88-90 I think Federal is more likely. All of Federal, Reo, and Beiderman made "Tractor, Wrecking, Type C-2" but to me the hood sides look like those of the Federal.

REO29XS
There's one sitting in the back yard of the S&P Museum.
I'll take photos and send to Hanno as I'm to much of a luddite to figure out how to post photos. Cheers! Mike |
Jeep Mods
Cool picture though!
That wing tip " 'im lookem plenty crook fella" Did anybody notice the modification to the jeeps front guard?? Guess that's to stop the mud there throwing up onto the passenger. Interesting idea. I'm with Grant Bowker, my first guess would have been Federal too. As mentioned in a previous thread, this truck has the tombstone front grill and the typical Federal bonnet sides. Now what's lurking behind the branches, that's the interesting question. Could it be a "Yankee Joe" ( 4X4 Chevrolet, similar looking to the GMC 2 1/2 ton 6X6 ) Pedr |
Whoops, Guess everyone noticed it 'ccept me.
Sorry Keith ( you>:fry: Pedr :bang: |
