Wanted to buy

Piston rings for White Scout Car currently under restoration at Nungarin Heritage, Machinery and Army Museum.

The rings we took out are just a shade under 4 inches diameter and well worn so New 4" rings will get her going again.

Is there a source in Australia or do we need to cast a wider net ?

Any offers or leads would be very much appreciated

Cheers

Phill

I used 4 inch Holden V8 rings and machined the grooves to suit. This was in a Studebaker that has the same engine.

Rings

Ford Cleveland V8 rings are 4" and available in oversize up to 0.060" Groove depth & height might be the trick, go to a speed shop & they should be able to source some rings & machine them to suit. :thup2:

Your piston rings for the JXD engine are on EBAY

I have an old Hastings Catalogue (No relation?) and for the JXD engine they list 2 sizes of Piston rings for JXD engines (4.00in bore plus oversize) :

Up to Ser No 11462: 18x 1/8 rings, 6x 3/16

From Ser 11462: 6x 3/32, 6x 1/8, 12x 3/16

As these are 4-ring pistons, I doubt you'd find a complete off the shelf kit from a Ford 302, Chev 350, Holden 308 or Chrysler 360 (all 4.0 bore and 1/16, 1/16, 3/16 ring sizes)

I'd give JP Pistons in SA a try.

Another alternative might be Ross Prince in Qld.

Thanks

Thankyou all for the response.

Bill at the museum is a master mechanical engineer and should be able to knock something up from ford or holden parts but we would like to keep the white as authentic as possible.

Tony - yes a distant relation but not close enough to have put the bight on for parts.

Is Ross Prince still in the game and if so does anyone have contact details ?

Lost track when i sold the last of my Blitz collection over a decade ago

Cheers and thanks

Need pistons and rings now...

:whinge Sadly upon further examination we have found several piston lands have been broken off by a PO attempting to effect field repairs.

So now we need a full set of pistons and rings for the scoutcar...

Any leads much appreciated. I have contacted several US companies but received no reply so far

Thanks

Thankyou Dan,

I tried to get some pics of our project vehicle onto MLU once again this morning.

Owing to a lack of technological facilities and trained personnel my mission has been aborted.

In other words the local telecentre and local library can't help.

I might have to have them burnt to disk and mailed to another MLUer to help me out.

Cheers

Parts

Phil

You would be far better off buying those parts locally.. there would be Stude engine stuff around over here in the East ..you just have to sniff it out and ask the right person .... I know it isnt easy ... some collectors are helpful and others are not ... Mike . It might pay to advertise in the club mags ....

Hercules JXD engine parts

Yes, Ross Prince in Queensland has practically everything available for these engines! New pistons, rings, bearings, etc. Phone number is 07 41244075.

Change of tactic

We tried to contact Ross Prince - repeatedly- with no success and so took up an offer from a respected Perth engineering firm who are now welding new lands onto the pistons then machining them back to original...!

Yes I was amazed that it could be done too but there you have it.

If it all works out well I will try to get some pics posted up for those interested.

Cheers and thanks for all the offers of advice

You will be paying about $200 per piston from JP ... thats if they have the tooling to make them .

Good to know - if only as a back up if the machining job doesn't work out.

Will keep you posted - AND one day I will get some pics posted up even !

Re: White Scoutcar Piston rings wanted

The big driver, as I understand it, is not an excess of non-conforming areas between the ring face and the cylinder wall, but rather radial "flutter" of the piston ring under conditions of rapidly changing cylinder pressure. With four bolts per cylinder, the bore distortion will tend to have fourth-order and lower components, to which most compression rings could readily conform. The concern is that cylinder pressure will rise much more rapidly than top groove pressure due to restricted flow between the top land of the piston and top groove. When the pressure acting on the exposed portion of the ring face is sufficiently high compared to the pressure in the groove, the ring can lift off of the cylinder wall and allow large amounts of gas to bypass.

Thanks

Hi Phillip, not sure if this is too late. Have you got the parts you require for your hercules engine yet. If not I do have NOS sets of pistons, Rings, Bearings, Gudgeons, Cams, Oil pumps, Water pumps etc.

Spare Parts

Hi Phill - I was just going to suggest Colin Jones until I read the last post. Colin has an absolute bucket load of Stud gear, most of it still in its grease proof wrapping.

BTW - have you located thos instrument panels yet?

Bob

Philliphastings 30-08-10 06:11

Thanks

Thanks Colin, the oldies Bill and Frank re-assembled the Scoutcar engine while I was away and I'm told it's all good. If however it turns out to be faulty I will certainly be in touch and thanks for the offer.

Bob, I have a few rusty instrument cluster frames etc so better PM me an address and I will get them on their way...

Cheers

Phill
