Flemish

We have just got back from Calais, where there is apparently a war museum which we did not get to see, and Belgie/Belgique. We went into Flanders and drive through the various lovely towns from De Penne to Oostende. However, I know no Flemish so was a bit embarrased. In my ignorance may I ask if Flemish is exactly the same as Nederland Dutch or are there any differences? Also Belgian German from High German?

To our Belgian members, I have to say that I have not been to your lovely country for many years and it is beautiful. With few exceptions drivers were observing speed limits.

Davids trip to Flandern

David Flams (Flemish) is indeed diferent to Dutch (Nederlands) but both can easy undeerstand each other...my own father whom was fluent in Flemish could easily converse with Dutchmen and South Africans spreaking Afrikanse also as he had been taught in the two languages of Belguim he could converse for hours with the French Onions sellers who used to call in the 50's and 60's....they would sit there in the kitchen with the requisite beret on dipping the crusty bread into the bowl of soup....the the Blue Disc Cigaretes would be handed round.......talk was always the same subject "the war"...funny how things remain in your mind after all those years....now myself I have regular visits from a former Dutch Navy Captain who now resides on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.....best regards David.....malcolm erk van den Bogaert ( we dont use the van den)
