BYW, Keith's birthday has been kept quiet.

Keith, Happy Birthday mate.
What a better way to spend your birthday than planning a couple of days of border raiding and GT parts hunting.

Keith Webb 01-10-09 08:41

Thanks Euan

Have had a very stimulating birthday so far with a chap who flew Catalinas, Beauforts and Beaufighters who was also the school chaplain at my school. We spent over three hours talking about all sorts of things including some very interesting flying experiences he had as well as those of other former teachers and students.

As for the border raids.... Shhhhhhhh!

Hanno Spoelstra 01-10-09 09:23

Keith,

Congrats!

Hanno

All will be revealed after Saturday. It's not a personal raid by me, but rather someone I am aiding and abetting. We're celebrating the birthday on Sunday so all four children can be here.
And thanks again everyone for the good wishes!

hrpearce 01-10-09 14:10

We have a very good Intelligence Section here ( :salute:) and the plans are already well known. SA is safe, as is Yass and Ganmain. Unfortunately, the "Target for Tonight" is much closer to home and the defences are on high alert. :no4:

But "Int" didn't know about the birthday, so we'll let this one pass :giveup :note:

*Sings "Happy Ford FGT Parts to you, happy Ford FGT Parts to you"*

zemsi 01-10-09 21:16

... also many greetings from Switzerland :salute:

Spoil yourself and only drive Blitzes today

Greetings
Chris

I think Chris is saying drive my blitz and put the fuel on my tab;)

Keith Webb 01-10-09 22:11

Thanks Chris and Robert

Well I didn't get to drive a blitz on the day but am making up for it today and tomorrow in different ways - tomorrow of course is the secret mission involving assisting in a border raid but also revisiting an interesting yard on the return trip...
And today delivering a front shell to go onto my old FGT No8 which is being restored by Alan Growse.

Ganmain Tony 02-10-09 03:57

How old?

Keith Webb 02-10-09 09:40

Yeah! and...

'Weeweeeeeeese the hounds!'

Ganmain Tony 02-10-09 10:57

Auf deutsch

Entschuldigungen Chris - aber Sie kennen I' m focht extrem an, wann es zu sprechendem Deutschem kommt. Wussten Sie dort sind eine australische Form des Deutschen? - Sein angerufener Tasmanian. Us NSWelshman may have to do something with Keith and his non-symmetrical haircut!

Keith Webb 03-10-09 13:45

Now it's safe and well inside the Victorian border...

I can reveal Euan is the lucky man and this is his treasure:

We know that but things like this are traditionally not announced until the item in question has been secured.

This is a South Australian Railways built LP2A carrier, hull number 4993 built in 1943.

It is naturally missing a few of the chunky items such as the engine, gearbox and radiator but in it's favour is very intact in many other respects, not the least being it's almost unmolested hull.

Here are a couple more pictures:

greetings

I tried to answer this morning but the clouds came in thick and blocked the saterlight :bang:
I understand what you said Keith but as this was your birthday thread I was guessing you had snatched the perfict Blitz from under the noses of the unsuspecting locals
Euan can I congratulate you on your purchase or will Katrina give me a backhander for encourageing this rash purchase

Imagine that! A Birthday Cake with an exploding cigar in it!

As a result of the Victorians deftly employing Soviet "Maskirovka" techniques (Trans: trickery, deception ), the NSW Border Raiding Patrol was duped into defending the "Last Remaining Unrestored FGT in NSW" from interested parties round the clock for a whole cold, wet Long Weekend, while all along the real objective was in fact some Farmer's Grain Silo, which was then discovered to have a Carrier next to it! (A Carrier, BTW, which we had already BR'd from SA!)

"F" Troop, NSWBRP have thrown the book (actually a Training Pamphlet on "Misinformation and Counter-Intelligence") at Int Sec, who have gone away to assiduously study said book.

Mutter, mutter: Congrats on a nice find, Euan!

Keith Webb 04-10-09 20:10

Raid

One of the most amazing things about it is it's proximity to Corowa too, and the fact it was known to a few for a long while. There were two there and the other was also recently Br'd on the quiet.

I haven't been keeping up to date with whats been happening here, to busy being focused on my shed lately. Happy Birthday Keith, another year closer to retirement.

Euan
The carrier looks pretty good, I noticed the loader has a fair strain on one of the tyres, did you take any photos of the inside of the carrier

Safe on Vic soil.

4 Attachment(s)
After a long day of driving, rain and junk yards the carrier is now unloaded safe on Vic soil. Our first attempt to unload was unsuccessful with little traction on wet paddock so a return trip the next day was in order. I fired up the trusty rusty yard crane (ex ambo) blitz and lifted the carrier up till the trailer rolled out. The other find of the day in a junk yard about 180km from the carrier pick up was a nice carrier fuel tank. So now the job of collecting missing bits starts. Stay tuned for progress. Thanks again to the BR team for all their help, I wont name them for obvious reasons. :no4:

Carrier #4493

Hi guys - belated B/Day wishes to Keefy.

Euan - #4493 made under contract MOS. 170. Of interest #4494 lives in SA.

Bob

Euan McDonald 06-10-09 01:13

carrier bits

Hey salesman, after you cut up that intact carrier to build project Phoenix you must have a load of parts left over. I am looking for the engine cover, storage bins, complete instrument panel, pattern for seat back, tail lights, just to name a few.
