Hi Does anyone but me own any MLVWs, The Bombardier 2 1/2 ton. I presently have 3 of them, one is an M36C, MRT with Hiab and winch, 1 supply parts truck with cage and one cargo. The MRT is 100% functional and we use it for lifting in the yard. The 2 other deuces will have bodywork and paint done during the winter. Both are runners.
When we got them DND had removed the oil filter housing, the oil cooler and the starter. It took me 2 days to find the parts
I have been fighting with DND to be able to register the vehicle but so far no luck. Still working on the registration. If I call DND they refuse to speak to me.

If you look at your bill of sale it will most likely say "Sold as Slavage". This is done so there is no title to the vehicle and then DND does not have a law suite on there hands when someone put one on the road when the single circuit brake system fails.

I see by the flag you are or have been a EME, in 27 years in the service in the EME branch I have never seen a catatrophic brake failure on the MLVW. The brake system on the MLVW is exactly the same as the old 2 1/2 ton M135 and the US M35. I have both M135s and M35s registered for the road. The trucks pass a detailed yearly provincial safety inspection. If the brakes are so bad why is DND still driving the MLVW on a daily basis and in a lot of cases by people who have very little experience with big trucks.
I have talked to a lot of people in DND and everone passes the buck. I have letters that state I can register the truck after passing a provincial safety, I have letters that say nothing and no one can tell me who made the policy.
If I sound a little bitter believe me I am :bang:, I'm sorry if I offend anyone. the way DND is going we are not going to have any Cdn vehicles to preserve. Can you imagine where we would be if 50 years ago they would have banned all ex-military vehicles from the road. No CMPs, no jeeps,etc.....
This is why I am fighting this ruling, in 20-25 years there will be no Canadian military vehicles on the road. Gilles

I am posted 1 RCR and have comletely rebuilt the enitre brake system on more then one MLVW. I find nothing wrong with system. It may just be DND Politics to cover one rear end because technology has advanced since the truck first entered service.


P.S. I've help restore a M135 and many othe military vehicles with single circuit brakes, and drive them with confidence.

Thanks sorry for the attitude, I just get frustrated some days. I have an MRT w/winch in excellent condition an would love to drive it on the road. I have a whole load of parts for my vehicles. I have a plan to register my MLVWs wait for it :devil:

Do either of you have the two SMG brackets still installed up and behind both seats?

I'm looking for one to fit to my M38A1CDN3.

Better still, do either of you have a spare one that you'd be willing to part with? Of course I'll pay a reasonable price plus shipping (Ontario).

I can understand your frustration Gilles. There are a number of PCCd, BLRd or any other VOR reason MLVWs sitting in the Meaford compound. I am not allowed to remove a bracket from these clapped out hangar queens which are soon due to be disposed.

I have several mounts available, I removed them from the back of my MRT when I redid the rear shelter. I will look in the pile of stuff that I have, do you need both pieces upper and lower. I see that you collect a lot of switchboard and radio equipment, you would really love the small telephone exchange I have designed for the M37. This is a large switchboard. Gilles

I think where the single master cylinder system problem comes into play is that the MLVW was built in 82/ 83, at which time DOT standards were to have dual systems. The DND must have been exempt from that rule at the time, as we are with so many of the specialised vehicles. Technically, the MLVW should not pass a safety because it does not have a brake system that meets the standards of the year it was built in. Lighting will also be an issue since it does not meet SAE standards of the time, although there is lighting now available which will upgrade the older non-SAE approved mil lighting. Reflectors are also a tad on the skimpy side for a truck the size of the MLVW. The wipers and defroster would likely not meet the modern specs, but can be easily upgraded.

If you recall, the Iltis were also sold in a similar way at first. They were not certified by DOT, and there were shortcomings with the lighting systems on them compared to the required standards for the period they were built.

At least your ML's weren't cut in half before you got them :D

I'm after the SMG bracket (one piece, 2 rubberised clamps), not the two piece rifle brackets. Many MLVW users don't even notice that there are 2 SMG brackets mounted fairly high up on the rear wall.

Help clear up my confusion WRT to the SB...first you say it's small, then in last sentence you say it's large????? Is it an F&F board?

I am also looking for the SMG bracket as one of my 'clamps' is broken. Located in Ottawa.

I have 3 -4 SMG mounts available for the needy. I checked the trucks today and we definitely have the correct items. They have to be removed from the cabs. Gilles
