CMP mirrors on european trucks ?
 

I see in a lot of CMP pics on Hannos site etc of european CMP's all have kind of an oval mirror on both sides, Is this some kind of aftermarket mirror over in europe ?, as I thought the OEM CMP mirrors were the slender, rectangular kind
like most have here on CMP's Ive seen ?

I need 2 mirrors for my CMP and kind of like the oval ones, do any of you have any more info on where they can be had ?, are they newer surplus mirrors ? or old NOS ones ?, here is an example of kinda what I talking about .

Do a search on them. There was a lot sold from Argentina via Ebay, and quite a few of us bought them.

Is there any chance to find a couple more of the Argentinean ones?

Or, if not, where can we found something ... "similar"?

Another source is British MGB sports car mirrors. They are available (about $125 if I recall) but are chromed.

Try Paul Beck vintage supplies here in the UK.
I bought a pair from him a few years ago in their original painted condition, exactly as Lynn showed them above. From memory, I think he charges the same for the chrome ones.

@Keith: Yes, it seems that Paul Beck "Vintage supplies" is a one way solution and as Robert Pearce wrote here the mirror is offered in three configurations now: in chrome, nickel or black finish for 87.00 British pounds each..

Kostas.....funny, I also searched the forum for "mirror subjects" recently (also looking for two). I guess the Argentinian source dried out in the meantime.

As Bruce mentioned; some MG parts suppliers offer the CMP-model mirrors (Lucas orginally????), although I think they were actually used on the old TF and TC and not the MGB.

When these were going hot and heavy I made an contact with him on a price for 50 sets and he quoted me a price and ensured me he could fill the contract,,,and I posted that info here on MLU..so that may be what you were thinking about.

but for the price he quoted and the freight it was not in my budget
..but I have lost or deleted his contact info..
But he had them at that time but I see no more of them on E-Pay so may have closed down the mirror factory. :drunk: :sheep: :cheers: :salute:

On 6th May 2010 Adame (banned) said that he had bought the remaining 20 original Carrier/ CMP mirrors from the chap in Argentina.

The CMP mirrors appear to be copied from the British WD 1924 Pattern mirror, which was still in use and obtainable from RAOC stores in the 1970's. The Ferret in British service was probably the last use of them. Manufacured by Desmo, Raydyot, etc, they had slight manufacturing differences between them. I think some of these vintage motor spares suppliers have found WD ones and chromed them for the vintage car market as they are typical of the era.

I remember as an apprentice mechanic (1971), removing them from the Mk5, 6x6 Inters, that the Army had bought for 4 Medium Battery to use as gun tractors, for the 5.5's. The gunners complained, and the mirrors that weren't "accidentally" broken, were quickly removed to the rubbish bin to be replaced by large flat mirrors bought at local purchase.

The first one is made like the original, the cheaper one is not the same.

I agree with Lynn. It's a pity it doesn't show the rear cover, but when it does you will see the cover is missing the four screws on the panel and the thick edge. I think these mirrors are originally used on the dash of MG TC's.
Pity though.....would have been a very nice price!

Show us the back please. that one looks like a flat mirror.
The ones I'm showing,are from Argentina, and are CMP mirrors wih the the curved glass.

That's interesting because CMP mirrors, although they have convex glass are flat in profile. The Argentinian mirrors look to be flat too.

If you check the parts book you will see 17702 is the correct part number.

So you can see the front is slightly curved. The ones with the fully curved body are for other vehicles.

Think you will find that the curved back version was used on the range of British post WWII FV vehicles, the Austin Champ and the Ferret etc. I never picked up the difference until now.

Now we know that CMPs started out with cheap, and readily available mirrors when they were built so some where along the way things have been turned up side down.

The latest visual match found by Dusan look very much like the original mirrors but at the cost listed work out to cost something like $650US plus VAT, shipping and import duties for the six I would need for my 3 trucks is a little rich for my blood particularly as I seem to loose one to breakage each year. Drive these trucks in the woods the mirrors tend to be like whiskers on a cat they are the first thing to touch.

But we can all live in hope of find the mother load of a couple of crates full of unpainted versions. But if people keep looking maybe we can create a false market and some body will jump on the bandwagon and start making them.

I would not keep up my hopes. Two motherlodes of CMP mirrors turned up (that I know of) one in Italy, the other in Argentina. The former we never heard about again, the latter cache was sold on ebay for good money.

As for "somebody making them", as you can see by all the links to webshops "they" already do? You could try asking those suppliers if they could provide unchromed ones, which would lower the cost.
