WANTED! Universal/Bren Gun Carrier
Hey Gang..
I am looking for a Universal Carrier project. Doesn't need to be running, or even have an engine for that matter. I am looking for one in rough (ie. inexpensive) condition. Would prefer one that has trans/bogey wheels intact. If you know where one is sitting, please let me know. Prefer one somewhere in Ontario. Thanks!!! Ty |

A friend of mine has a universal carrier restoration project that he may be interested in selling. It still has its original engine (not running) and lots of spare parts including a set of treads. OK, here she is. I know very little about these carriers, old cars are more to my interest, but a friend who has been restoring universal carriers for over 20 years suggests that this one may be very rare. We believe it to be an early model Mark 1 carrier, possibly british, with several inconsistencies from the Canadian production versions including: A brass shifting gate, a slot in the engine cover to accomodate a dipstick for the fuel tank (earlier models didn,t have fuel gauges) and spring mounts on the rear axle housing, also not found on later models. The armour plating is all intact and uncut and it still has the original flathead V8 engine. I,m attaching a few photos, so if anyone has any information to offer, it would be greatly appreciated. Is it just me, or does it have a bellows type aircleaner hanging under the engine cover deck?

The engine cover has a plate on it giving instructions on how to purge the aircleaner of dirt prior to starting the engine. Would that be the bellows type of aircleaner you mentioned? I,m attaching a photo of the tag.

dont quote me but i beleive the British rear bogey assemblies were fabricated steel rather than cast and the engine rails are slightly different, if this helps ?
I wish i had had something like this as a starting point......mine was terrible...not the worst on here but far from the best :D |

By the way, the picture I attached is of an embossed number found on the lower left hull behind the tensioner bogey. Does anyone know how to decode these to possibly find out the carriers history? Thanks

looks like a part number TL10256 ? dont have my parts book to hand. you will find that mose parts will start with CTL or TL.

just had a look in the FUC-03 lists and cannot find a trace of that number. is the photo of the cast part of the front idler ? any more pics ?

Sorry, thats the best pic I have. The number is on the extreme lower left portion of the hull. It would normally be completely hidden behind the tensioner bogey.

Part number
It is indeed the part number for the left hand front bogie bracket. the casting is damaged, and should read "TL13256" This is the early one with the sprung loaded ratchet arm. The book says "not to be demanded. Order part CO1UC-105092"
Richard, I believe SOME of the Bogie bracket assemblies were fabricated. Most were cast. The bed rails in a British carrier are made from channel steel (sharp outer corners), and the Canadian ones are channel formed by rolling, leaving the outer corners "rounded" |
