Temora Jan 2010 flying weekend
 

This year there will be only five flying weekends, the first of which is held Jan 30/31.
I was fortunate to get some air to air of the Catalina arriving from Albion Park on Friday. The conditions were hot and bumpy and you could see the wings flexing on the Cat.
It recently received its new blisters fitted along with a paint job and is looking stunning. It will be even nicer soon as a N.O.S. nose turret will be fitted in a couple of months time.

The Germans used to call them "The flying porcupine" I'm led to believe. The name is attributed to the amount of machine guns they had sticking out of them!!

Actually Tony, that was in reference to the Short Sunderland.... don't ask me how I remember this, but I do - have always been enamoured of the Sunderland. The Cat was a better aircraft for the job, though, more maneuverable with a longer range... :teach:

I knew someone would get me. Thanks Jiff I had forgotten about that monster of a thing! Would make the Catalina seem tiny in comparison.

And to co-incide with the first flying weekend of the year, a quote from the Sydney Morning Herald:

"Temora council took the opportunity on Saturday to rename Menzies Street as Tom Moon Avenue, to honour the aerobatic display pilot who was killed just over a year ago, when his plane crashed at the airport while he was practising his display routine. Tom was a well-known and much-liked director of the marvellous Temora Aviation Museum, and four-time Australian national aerobatic champion. Menzies will not be forgotten, though. The council has plans to name the caravan park at the airport Menzies Place."

Tom died 20 Jan 2009.
