Colour Patches WW2
Hi,
Can anyone give me details of the patches worn by Canadian servicemen during WW2? I was reading a war diary today for the Dundas, Stormont and Glengarry Highlanders which stated they were part of the 3rd Div and were issued with a Grey Patch. So how exactly how did the colour patch work, a different colour for each Div regardless of the regiment or was there another colour added to the patch to denote the regiment? Hope the question is understandable. |
Organization
Very basically, each within each Division there are three Brigades, each Brigade consists of three Regiments. The Regiments within the Brigades and the Brigades are fixed to the Division. The Divisions were numbered 1 to 5 with the first three being Infantry Divisions and the last two being Armoured, they use the following corresponding colours:
1st Division - Red 2nd Division - Royal Blue 3rd Division - French Grey 4th Division - Green 5th Division - Maroon For a more detailed information of the Canadian Army Overseas there are quite a few publications which you can access through your local library or purchase. |

There were three brigades in the 3rd Division, the 7th, 8th and 9th.
The 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade was made up of the following units: -The Highland Light Infantry of Canada -The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders -The North Nova Scotia Highlanders -9 Canadian Infantry Brigade Ground Defence Platoon (Lorne Scots) The French Grey patch was 2" by 3" and worn on the shoulder just below the Canada patch. Hope this helps. Regards, Jim |
