Canadian M-59 APC

I stumbled across this image of an M59 APC that was being used by the Canadian Army during the Hurricane Hazel clean-up near Toronto in November 1954 and thought it may be of interest. The image is low-res but the "USA 4XXXXXXX" registration number can be seen on the side.

Would this have been lent to the Canadian Army for evaluation as a potential replacement for the Universal Carrier? The date seems to fit with the early stages of the Bobcat program and the Cambridge Carrier O.P. that survives at the S&P museum.

Note that the chap sitting on the far side of the APC is wearing a Glengarry.

Jason: By sheer coincidence, I posted in www.canadiansoldiers.com (q.v.) a query about this very picture.

It is on p.74 in the book "Hurricane Hazel, Canada's Storm of the Century", Gifford, Dundurn Press.

Dave: So you were 3 years old living in Port Credit at the time. I was ten years older living on 42nd St in Long Branch. The flooded Etobicoke Creek nearly swept our house into Lake Ontario\, about 300 yards away. The water reached the west side of 42nd St., we lived on the east side....66 feet saved us.

APCs in Canadian Army doctrine

During my father's (more) active Reserve army career, he planned or was part of various exercises or schemes. I recall reading some of the orders for one exercise. The mobility factor was improved with APCs. The only reason I remember that was the M113s were fresh in my mind, and the scenario was written for M59s.
