Here is a few pics of 8th recce carriers. Numbers 13372 and CT 2015 can be seen. The first pic is in training in England, the rest in Europe. Cheers Brian

The carrier is a Mk2 so would have a much higher CT number than that. I see more numbers following what you read, to give "CT201513"

curious i would have thought that too but its in Nigels lists CT199801 - 201800 UC Mk1 (2000 made) contract no. CDLV1518 by ford Canada perhaps they were retro fitted with the after mods, bit like the "Face Lift" as described in David Fletchers book, they did change to round bar on the armour and different stowage on Mk1's during the war.

MkI verses MKII

This carrier is in the last 300 of that 2000 order. When the order was made it was for MKI's, but it may have been that the change to MKII's took place during production of that order. I would doubt that conversion took place afterwards, in Europe.

Is it a Boys rifle in the first picture? Looks very impressive. I'm curious about mounting one of these and the cost to buy a deac Boys. Phil

Boys rifles in Canada are very few and far between. That is for live ones. Deactivated are even harder to come by, and with the price of a working one, you sure don't want to e deactivating it.

If you find a Boys rifle in Canada for under 4 grand, run, don't walk, to the bank to get the money. More likely you will be paying in the $5500 to 7K range. Even in the US, where they are easier to come by, the price on them has reached beyond these guidelines. They are also not exportable from the US, unless you are a military or police department, or a military museum. I managed to get mine from the US just as these regs were being tightened up.

BLIMEY !! seriously though Rob that is Mental, mind i can understand about who can have them after all an anti tank weapon can do some damage to a squad car :) guess mine wont be having the Boys rifle then unless i can successfully drive my carrier through the plate glass entrance at Leeds armouries, but then if i did that i would go for the mini gun and have myself a Minigun Carrier Universal Mk1 No.1. hehehhe

Don't waste your time with a boys (pun intended) rifle - get a .50, like in the flood photo.

To see what this looks like on a T-16, please reference the latest issue of the MVPA Army Motors. M2 dewats are $5K, by the time a mount, cover, and all the 'bits' make it to your machine. You will need a friend to help - as they are a 'heavy' machine gun!

It does look more impressive, so was the Browning often mounted on the carrier and were the base mounts made specifically for it? I do have a fondness for the British gun, however, and would like to mount one or the other. Phil

I like the MMG carriers with the Vickers mounted on the top engine cover, they look awesome.

8th Recce fellows told me they traded Lugers and /or whiskey for .50's. The more firepower the better. Brian

Interesting stories talking to veterans. Anyone have a modern close-up picture of either gun mounted? Isn't the Boys on the prohibited list? Phil

Boys is non-restricted in Canada, same as any bolt action hunting rifle.

RichardT10829 01-04-10 23:10

Can you imagine the mess it would make if you shot a moose with it .... baboosh

Phill 02-04-10 01:54

Yes the moose would be done for. I think my carrier will have to have one, maybe I should start looking. Phil

boyes' rifle

Here's a few shots of our carrier with the boyes' mounted, (and some not).

The Ottawa events were a real hoot. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can beat being in a line of carriers and other trucks rolling down the fourlane at a fast idle in top gear.

When mounted, the bipod rests against the angle iron "splash rail" mounted across the front of the carrier. The butt rests in a clip, or we tie it in place with a bit of twine.

Although it gets carried a lot, it gets used little. I plan on making a set of chamber/ sub cal adapters so we can popm off a few blanks with it, but that isn't too high on the list of priorities...

(sorry - thought I had more photo's here...)

The second photo shows a fuel/water can holder in front of the driver. That was wrecked when the driver of a quad-runner decided to test how hard the armour was.

3 and 4 are from the Windsor show last year.

More when I can find the sepias' from Ottawa
