UC mk2 in Norway

2 Attachment(s)
Hi
Here's a couple of pictures of a mk2 belonging to a Norwegian museum. Can you help me and point out anything that's missing or doesn't look right. Any history available on the number? Thanks!

Edit: The number wasn't easy to read from the pictures, it's T297196.

But with such a nice machine it's hard to find very much wrong!! Colour, kit, arrangement all look good for a Canadian Mk.II* If pressed, I would suggest finding a Canadian headlamp pot (if the carrier is in fact Canadian) and re-painting the water cans gray.

I don't know about British cans, but Canadian 2 gal. water cans were painted gray like this:

More 'gray' pics:

You could be right Bruce? I'm sure the British ones were black. Ron

Post the data plate information and we may be able to tell you more. Contract number, with serial number and month/year of manufacture.

Hi Asbjorn, She looks like a very nice carrier.
As you are looking for criticism,
What is happening along the side at the front guard?
Is that a normal mirror arm arrangement?

The carrier was built by Ford Canada, do you have a picture of what the correct headlight looks like? The water cans will be painted the correct color, thank you.

I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner, the museum is close to Stavanger on the south-west coast. Contact me if you're in the area again and I'll open the museum for you, any of you. Our website is http://krigshistorisk-museum.no.

Thank you, the missing side skirts of the guards will be put back on when they have been sandblasted and painted. Don't know about the mirror arm, it does look longer than the ones I've seen on other carriers.

That is about as complete as they come. Excellent original appearing example of a late production Canadian made for British contract NO-2 MKII* Universal Carrier C31UCW. The adjustable mirror arm may be correct to other examples, mounted on the exterior right side of the UC NO-2 MKII*, unlike the NO-1 MKI* which is a simple post mounted on the front. Similar to the WC NO-3 MKI* and WC NO-4 MKI*.

Very nice example showing the late modification using Ford CMP truck front bumper "D" rings installed on the rear vertical upper armour. The lift rings are mounted inside the rear compartment where they did not interfere with stowage over the differential cover, or when the Canadian No. 2 FT WASP rear exterior mount flame thrower fuel tank was installed.

The correct headlight, i.e., the headlamp that was installed at the factory in Canada is similar to, but usually not the same as that found on the Ford CAB 11 or CAB 12 CMP trucks. Note the wiring differences and part numbers. Subtle, but different. As "never" and "always" does not apply to wartime production, you could substitute the more common and easier to acquire CAB 11-CAB 12 lamp shell if you thought it was necessary to return to factory standard. But who is to say the Brits did not replace that headlight during service life prior to the carrier being disposed of ?

Thanks for posting!

Very nice.

Are the stencils original? Shaun had a thread a little while ago showing some he found on a MK2. It might be nice to take some pictures of the museums one and post on that thread if you get a chance?

It all helps everyone with a MK2 get the details right.

Thank you, that's valueable information. It's not easy to find out how the carrier looked when it left service, and what civilian modifications were done. I have attached a picture showing how it looked the day it was found, the headlight is not painted the same color as the rest of the vehicle, indicating that it was replaced after leaving service. It seems to be of Swedish manufacture.

Most of the stencils are original, all except the "sling here" stencils. I will post photos in Shaun's thread.

Asbjørn, could you please take some macro images of the details with any marking on the rubber hand grips for the gunner position?
