Starter motor problems?
 

After a long hard winter I tried to take the carrier out today. But the starter motor seem to have jammed.
Removed it from carrier ((Ha ha!!)
Tested on bench all seams to be OK. Dog moving easy.

But before I strip it down.
With good connections and full battery it did'nt seem to have the power to turn engine over. Is there a clutch behind the dog when it moves forward?

sounds like a typical mini problem ha ha ha... when i left mine for ages the earths got a wee bit corroded and she would not turn over for anything, i cleaned up all the terminals and voila.....check all your earths matey and i would perhaps give her a few turns on the old crank handle if she has been sat so long. but to answer your question without answering it... i dont know if there is a clutch behind the dog i thought the dog is actuated via solonoid, now this being the age it is would perhaps suggest inertia type starter, I will go dig out my Chillwell service manual there is a section on stripping them down.... starter motors that is....

book shows it to be an inertia type so as long as the dog is springing back and forth on test its ok. possibly corroded commutator brushes which can be cleaned with "fine glass paper but not emry cloth" sounds to me like a bad earth at first guess.

the book makes a reference that cold starting or starting after the vehicle has been stood for some time, should only be done after turning over by hand a few times to break the oil film.

are you running 12v system or original Barry?

I hate to suggest bad news, but is it the starter, or is the starter OK but having trouble turning over a motor that has 'stiffened' over the winter?

I agree sounds like a ground problem to me as well. Had a simular problem with a car, starter run good connected to a battery out iof the car but wouldn't instaled. Even a new starter had the same problem. Turned out to be the bolt that bolts the negative lead from the battery to the frame of the vehicle. Could be a bad connection between the engine and the chassis ground strap.

Is the Motor free?. Has it leaked water into the bore, and stuck?

Pull the plugs and turn the motor over by hand before you go any farther!!

I'd go with Harry - plugs out and hand turn over. Water could have filled a cylinder from seeping through a crack and valves are closed so she's hydraulic.

Hope that's not the case at all.

OK you Guys.


Bad earth.

Took starter off cleaned and greased. The starter is the mechanic kind when you pull the starting lever it moves the dog back and engages with fly wheel.

Put it back on today , cleaned all the earths. She started like a dream.
