Telescope Sighting No1 Mk1 A21
 

Had this given to me today. Cannot find anything on the internet about it or what it is /was used for or with.
Obviously it is a sighting telescope but what does it fit?
13 7/16" long and 1 1/2"outside diameter to the tube.
The lens are good and clear and a good clean-up is in line of it.
If you have any idea, please let us all know.

"Handbook of Artillery Instruments 1914", says "Telescopes, Sighting, No.1, Mks. I, I*, II and III, Magnification 3 diameters, Field of View 10°, Remarks: Fitted with a pointer. For sights of garrison guns."

All those shown in the Handbook are straight-through types so to speak, whereas yours has a 90° eyepiece, so taken with the more modern looking markings, I assume yours dates to the WWII period.

The Handbook does not clearly define "garrison", but the other alternative designation seems to be "field artillery", so I assume it means emplaced artillery, such as fortresses etc.

That at least corresponds to the name "Royal Garrison Artillery" given to those troops who manned fortifications in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Sniper spotting scope..

What you have there is a snipers spotting scope..
If you want to see one in use watch "Enemy At The Gates"..the Russian sniper is using one to poke through a hole in the rubble to look for the Nazi sniper without exposing his head..

Not a sniper's rifle scope or sniper's spotting scope. Ignoring the historical (in)accuracy of Enemy at the Gate only WWI trench scopes were angled - and they were typically scopes adapted to a sniper's needs and not specifically designed for a sniper. This is most likely an artillery ancillary.

There is the identical scope being used in the movie for the purpose stated..now it may have other uses but your statement.....

Not chopped liver, perhaps ground beef? I know nothing of modern equipment and speak only of historical Commonwealth equipment.
