Reo 28XS in Russian service

According to Kashcheyev/Reminskiy, »The Automobiles of Lend-Lease«, the Soviet Union received 190 Reo 28XS 20-ton tank transporters in 1943-44.
According to Bart Vanderveen, »Observer's Fighting Vehicle Directory, WW II«,

http://www.o5m6.de/pics/federal_604.jpg

the Reo 28XS tractor was a co-production of the Federal 604 and mainly produced for LL to UK and Canada.
So, are there still any samples of either vehicle around ?
I mean, not only the tractor but also the trailer ;-).
I'd really love to see if it looks like this one...

Hi Oliver,
Yes there are still some Federal 604 tractors around, we (family) have two in our collection (no trailers yet), one is drivable the other is not.

Both vehicles served in the New Zealand Army during the 1950's, untill they were replaced by International F230D transporters.

There is another Federal 604 about 25 km away in a small muesum, but this to has no trailer and has been coverted into a heavy wrecker!

As far as the trailers go they are now classed as very rare in original condition, because most have been stretched or heavily modified.
I have seen an original trailmobile in New Zealand way back in the late 70's
I thought it had been shortend, but found out later that they are not very big anyway (still trying to track that one down) its probably scrap by now.

There are a some Federal's in Australia that I know of which were for sale a while ago, but don't know about trailers.

Would be interested in any more pictures you may have of these handsome trucks:cool:

Kind regards,

Brent Delaney,

Hi Brent,
thanks for your reply and the pics, great !
I have finished the sideview, the overall shape and dimensions should be correct.
The car obviously lacks the (semi-)trailer, though ;-)
More infos at www.o5m6.de.
Cheers, Oliver.

I sent some pictures to Oliver, as I could not post them here as they are to big:( I am still trying to compact them so this forum will except them, any one care to help me out with this:D

Scanner..

Brent
You may have your scanner dpi set too high..
Change it to 75 or 100 dpi..When you preview your scan before you scan it it will tell you the size in kb..stay under 1000 kb and the forum should take it..
If still too big ,crop the image and preview again..When it gets below 1000kb ..scan it and save to desktop as a jpeg...
Then post..
To apply image go to browse..
Go to your desktop and find your image and open it ...That will move it to your posting.
Do NOT Preview your posting ..
This will lose your image...Just post it ,trusting in the great geek god....
Good luck..
Ill post a 3/4 front on the REO Later...

Alex,
thanks a lot for posting the Reo pictures.
Can you provide information on the trailmobile, too ?

According to Kashcheyev/Reminskiy, »The Automobiles of Lend-Lease«, the Soviet Union received 295 Diamond T-980 truck tractors from '43 on.
Here's one of at least two serving with the 1st Guards Tank Army in 1945.
Regards, Oliver.

Hi Oliver,
I do have all the details for the 20 ton trailmobil, I don't happen to have the manual at home with me right now, but will try to post details and pictures from it sometime soon.

Started and drove our Fed around the other day, always good for morale:D

Kind regards,

Brent D.

Sovyet diverted NEI orders?

Hi Oliver,

Surely you have been readin the other thread on MH trucks for the NEI.

One of the KNIL (Dutch colonial army) myths is that a lot of their deperately awaited shipments with trucks, tanks etc, were diverted to Russia after the fall of the NEI. I have never seen proof of this.

Did you ever come across any info relating NEI orders that were delivered to the SU after March 1942?

Logically, these would have become shipments to the Russian Far East?

Incoming shipments included most likely:
-Ford Jeeps (GP or GPW)
-light Ford/MH trucks,
-1 1/2 ton Ford/MH 4x4 trucks,
-Chevrolet G-series 1 1/2 ton 4x4's
-possibly heavier 6x6 Ford/MH chassis,
-White Scout cars,
-M3 light tanks,
-artillery/ordnance.

A lot was transferred to Australia or the Dutch West-Indies, but you never know.

If there was such a thing as NEI shipments diverted to the SU, this might give us some insight in what the NEI had actually ordered...

If there is nothing. than we can say we tried...

Thanks in advance
Nuyt

OK, OK, I'll move to the side of the road!

Oliver, I actually moved to the side of my seat when your picture of the KV-85 behind the REO loded on my screen. Outstanding picture, what a behemoth! Keep at it!

Russian KV-85

Eric,
not unprobable that deliveries to NEI were diverted either to East Russia or the Persian Gulf, as the truck supplies within the First Protocol Era were far behind schedule in the spring of '42.
MH 1.5ton 4x4 trucks were among the first to be delivered still in '41, the others of your list, except for the "light Ford/MH" and the "heavier 6x6 Ford/MH chassis", appeared later.
Unfortunately I have no further information.
Oliver.

nuyt 01-04-04 21:49

thanks

ok thanks,
and the MH 4x4's would all 500 be COE types I guess?

Kind regards,
nuyt
