I've been all over this thing trying to find the frame number, ID plates are gone (still MIA at this point) can anyone one tell me where it should be? it's a Chevy CGT, once I have this number is it possible to tell anything else about it, the lettering on the doors has almost rusted off entirely now, and is unreadable, I can make out two lines and the second starts with a "C8" maybe, dunno for sure. I'm trying to find out as much information about this truck as possible.
It has dark green paint underneath, and beige/ yellow in the interior, but the recesses on the inside, door jams and various other places are green. Was the beige/ yellow colour used as a primer to the green? Any help would be great, thanks. |

I don't think you will find one on a Chev GUN TRACTOR..... only on Fords....

You're out of luck on the serial number because Chev just put them on the data plates and nowhere else.

I was looking all over for any numbers, that's funny.
I noticed that after it rained the yellow went kind of green, so I rubbed the paint -and it came up green! weird it's like the blue pigment was stripped out by the sun or something. Another question for the guru's -see pic, on the passenger side of the transmission there is another PTO shaft about 3/4dia, any idea what it was used for? Thanks for the help gentlemen! Also included another pic that my friend put together, he thought it looked more like the wheelhouse from a ship |
Power Take Off-CGT
This is not stock, originally would have had a special PTO air compressor accessory mounted. This could of been the hydraulic pump drive for your hydraulics I see mounted in the cab.
In WW2 they would often air down the tires for greater traction then after would air them back up as needed. There should also be an air line connection point left front frame rail above the axle. They would have used a long rubber line with a gauge from there to the tires. Just an educated guess is your FAT would be 43-44 vintage, wooden steering wheel, thinner side window metel frames, longer supports for the front tip out windows. Check your engine build tag, right hand side block at fuel pump. Original engines were 216, also might have a replacement engine with more info. and possibly dated. Walde |

so with a little digging found them.
the number 48 is circled in big numbers beside a GM logo, then the small numbers are 3835327, which if I go off any of the VIN number ID pages it's between 42 and 51 so I can assume it's still the original 216 engine Can anyone supply me a pic of what the original air pump looked like? I still have the line in the frame rail as well, Thanks Walde, I was wondering what that was. |

Thanks Walde, seems your going to be my go to guy for all my questions(hope you have all the measurments for the rear section! Did all chevy's come with this? if so it might be a part that isn't so difficult to find... with luck of course!
Here's another angle I've been thinking with this thing I like the idea of the bigger engine, but the gears are still going to hold me back for traveling long distance, I think the bigger trucks came with 6:13 to 1 gears, I found a longer wheel base Ford in my travels that buried up to the top of the axles, I don't want to dig it out just to find that it's not going to jive. Are the Ford Axles the same as Chevy? |
