Park brake handles
3 Attachment(s)
I thought I would post this to see if any one can tell me why the MK1 carrier has the park brake bent to the right side and the MK2 has it bent to the left side??? (see Picture) I had two handles and I am giving one to a friend when I noticed the difference between the two. I looked through a bunch of carrier pictures I had to notice the difference. Can any one tell me why they had the change?

handle
Maybe one was for a right hander and the other for someone who was right hand challenged -when I first saw mine I thought someone had damaged it -greg

Mine is bent to the right. (parking brake lever)

Hi Guys,
just speculating here but if you think about the leverage you can apply palm down as opposed to palm up I think that palm down wins. Does the lever going to the right provide more clearance for the driver's leg? Perhaps you should consult a tailor - how does sir dress? Cheers, Dave |
You pull back on it to set the parking brake. To release you push to top button and push it all the way forward. I can't see it clearing the support/brace for the parking brake very well.
There is still lots of room under there for your legs too. I wonder if the left bent one is from a trailer? Anyway its not correct for a Carrier. |
Dodge perhaps ?

Park brake handles
My Mk1 & MK2 have the handles bent opposite .I wonder if it had to do with the fact that in Canada we drive on the right side of the road and in England they drive on the left . Where are these guys that made them , maybe they could set us straight ? I made Richard a handle and the Dodge handle was the same kind as the carrier. Ford are different .

Hi. My carrier has a straight hand brake lever, When the brake is off the release button at the top of the handle almost touches the underside of the front clasier plate, I guess bending the lever to one side will make releasing it easier. Its difficult to push the button down unless you have long fingernails, a design fault perhaps?,
na cant be it's a British design !. no i havent got long fingernails. not even before knocking 320 track pins out. Kevin. |
park brake handle
When I made the handle for Richard I had to shorten it about 2" before I put the bend in it because the Dodge power wagon one is longer
|
Nobody out there knows the answer? I have down loaded a lot of carrier pictures and if any one has a bunch of pictures them selves have a good look at the handle on the MK1 and MK2 carriers and they are bent in different directions. It does not make sense to me as both MK1 and 2 have the same drivers compartment layout ?

Dave, a few thoughts.
If the MkI and MkII are different, then it may be about an improvement in access. to grab the thing from the right side of the steeing wheel is probably harder to do, than from the left.
I think Jordan was talking about one from a Jeep trailer. There should be part numbers on them. They are a pig of a thing because that rod on the inside binds at the bend. I cant see the brace interfering with either a left or right bent one, but a straight one would be awkward too.( and not correct) |
Off subject a little but early Loyds had a straight hand brake lever while the later ones like mine are bent to the right, this is reflected in the parts books. Perhaps this came from a common design review following field experiance?
