Options for wheels and tires for a 42 GPW

I have a set of trailer wheels that are 4.5 x 16. They will fit the military tires but what other tires are available for this size rim and what are you guys running on your jeeps. How wide can you go before you need fender flares.

Second question:

Can you get fender flares for a 42 gpw jeep?

tires

Hello Nelson

The proper tire is the 6:00 x 16 Military tire, which are easy to obtain from MV parts dealers in Canada or the US. Even some larger tire stores can get them. I have also seen some civilain tires mounted on the same rim.

If you are planning on keeping the jeep original then there is no need for fender flares.

If you are planning on modifying it to a swamp buggy or rock climber, i would say that you might be on the wrong web page as generally those of us who own military vehicles on this site keep them as original as possible.

Yes, you can get fender flares and other after market accessories for any of the jeep models.

You would have to see what the rules are in your province. In Ontario the tire must stay covered by the fender or fender flare. It cannot project beyond either.

thanks

I see what you mean

Hello Nelson

I see what you mean.

This would be lots of work to return it back to the original look. Other than the body.
Looks like a lift kit has been added, different seats, rollbar, different wheels, Signal lights added to replace the marker lights, different front bumper. I am guessing that it is 12 volt rather than 6 volt.

But not impossible. It will take time and of course money. Most of the parts needed can be bought brand new, NOS or used from MV parts dealers. Usually they are cheaper than going to the local auto parts store for parts. But compare prices.

The seats look more comfortable. My wife would like those ones.

Accesories for a CJ2 should fit this body as they were the same specs. The first batch used the left over wartime production.

If you do plan on returning it to the original look, it can be done in stages, so that you can still enjoy the jeep. i.e. One winter do the seats and take out the rollbar, the next year do the suspension and wheels. etc.

If it is 12 volt you can leave it as such. Nobody would know the difference.

Or keep it as it is and enjoy it the way it is.

It took me 10 years to restore my GPW, mind you i was dependant on others to do the metal and mechanical work. I could do the take off and reassembly bit. It had less original parts than you did and i had to combine several to make one.

They are relatively easy to work on, which is good for people like me who do not profess to be mechanics.

Enjoy the toy.

i can be reached at cmpmagazine@hotmail.com if you have any questions. I think we talked about serial numbers from G503.

thanks
Eric

I used to subscribe to JP Magazine, and just recently let it run out. They had plenty of tech tips and stories about bada$$ off-road Jeeps, but not enough about M38A1 or early CJ5 Jeeps to keep my interest. These maagazines are supported by ordinary readers and by ad revenue. There are lots of businesses trying to make and sell what readers want (or are attracted to buy). I'm sure you'll find some supplier whose products suit your needs.

But with regards to this forum of historic rebuilders and restorers, what you are asking about is next to unthinkable. We want those skinny tires, agonizingly slow and enemic drivetrains. We would prefer to read your stories about removing the school bus yellow paint, the indoor-outdoor carpet floor mats, and wide tires.
