Have any of you Down-under been watching this series? It's playing here now and I'm finding it refreshingly different than most of the American series on TV now. I don't know how accurate it is but I quite like it and its characters. What say you?

Wasn't there was a hue and cry about the actors wearing current RAN ranks?

I can't speak for how accurate the current series of Sea Patrol (shot of the Armidale class patrol boat)http://www.navy.gov.au/HMAS_Armidale but the earlier series shot on the Fremantle class patrol boats was fairly true to life. The only criticism I have (and this is typical of a television programme) was that they saw more action and adventure in one episode than I did in the 5 1/2 years that I served onboard HMAS Geelong http://www.navy.gov.au/HMAS_Geelong

Wasn't there one like this a million years ago "Partol Boat" or something similar.
Shot on an HDML or Fairmile..

Wow Charlie! I'm impressed. "Patrol Boat" was on a long time ago....

Sea Patrol - Yeah...I can take it or leave it. Probably leave it to the fellahs that have actually served on one to discuss its accuracy.

The crews nicknames and some of the things they say are a bit too corny and cliche for mine.

Local Chap 03-11-10 02:52

Many of the nicknames are actually job titles; Buffer, Nav, Guns, etc.

In the Aussie services, many surnames almost automatically receive certain nicknames, often with no relation to the type of person. Some examples I've heard often are:

"Swampy" Marsh
"Dutchy" Holland
"Nobby" Clarke
"Spider" Webb
"Bomber" Harris
"Squizzy" Taylor (and Tailor)
"Uncle" Roberts (or full title "Yer Uncle")

Of course, there's a Spider and Bomber in the show, so we can guess what thier surnames are!

Funniest nickname I ever heard was "50 Cal" or just Fifty. Was he a machine gunner? Was his name Browning? Was he shot up? No, his name was R Finch. Think about it.

ozm29c 03-11-10 04:23

These were the names we commonly used at sea;
CO - Boss, skipper
Executive Officer - X
Navigating Officer - Nav
4th Officer - 4th
Ships technical Officer - Charge
Second Engineer - Second
Leading Seaman Engineer - Killick Stoker - called by their Nickname
Leading Seaman Shipwright - Killick Chppie - Called by their nickname
Leading Seaman Electrician - Killick Greenie - Called by their nickname
Petty Officer Seaman - Buffer
Petty Officer Coxswain - Swain
Able seaman - Dibbies (AKA Dib dabs)
Cook - Cheffo
Radio Operator - RO

On a minor war vessel, military protocol on calling each other by ranks or sir or chief etc was not really enforced. We were just too smaller a crew and had to live with each other too long and in close confines.
Other names;
Doris Day
Head on a Stick
Tug Wilson (My 20 year nickname) :D
Timber Mills
I had a friend of mine with the surname Muston, so he went through his navy time as "Herman" (Herman Munster)

The original series of Patrol Boat was shot on an "Attack" class patrol boat and the Later series on a Fremantle class patrol boat.

I have seen it once or twice, but I found it a little too "naive", for lack of a better word. It somehow reminded me of Baywatch, a type of show where the setting is more important than the subject of their job (unless their job is actually looking good on the beach ).

Naw, it's not NEARLY as bad as Baywatch... that was truly one of the worst programs ever to hit the screen!!:ergh:

Watch...

Mrs Howard likes to watch this one...
Not in any particular order, I like these bits:
* Bad guys think they can outwit the Australian Navy... and are summarily spanked
* Bad guys think they can outrun the Australian Navy... and are summarily spanked
* Bad guys think they can out firepower the Australian Navy... and are summarily spanked
* The sound of the light craft (would put a horn on a jelly fish)
* "Bomber" gets the uniform off... Check the 30 second mark
 :salute:
