Canadian 2nd Infantry Division

I am trying to ascertain what the formation sign for Canadian 2nd Infantry Div., consisted of, in period 1943-45. Seeking to identify the unit of a recce vehicle, the unit sign is plain enough, green over blue with 41 in white, but formation sign is nearly none existant except for small flakes of mid-blue ( Royal Blue I would say), over most of the sign's area. I found reference to the 2nd having a plain blue square, can anyone confirm this, please. No other colour is in evidence other than the blue.

Thanks.

regards, Richard

Blue

Richard,

You are correct. It was, and probably still is, a blue rectangle.

Cheers,
Dan.

Thanks Dan. That is about the same colour shade too.

2 CID throughout WW 2 was a dark blue square with a gold stylized maple leaf centered upon it.

The green over blue with white 41 was 14th Cdn Hussars, also throughout WW 2.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for that. The blue appears to match, in fact just been searching for info and the shade of Royal Blue is quoted on one website. Only problem is there is very little paint left, but enough to see that the majority of the sign is blue........sadly not evidence of gold or yellow maple leaf.

Hi Richard.

Here are two shots of original decals. The first one is an early war period 2nd Cnd Inf Div decal. The other is a 4th Armoured Div one but the maple leaf would be the correct shape. The 3rd picture is just to show another style of maple leaf.

As for colour, I used Tremclad dark blue. It was a very good match and looks right.

If you go for a "gold" maple leaf, don't use straight gold. Use a mix with some yellow. I always find the look a bit off if just straight gold. (just my 2cents.)

Thanks Jordan,

Have you ever seen evidence of the blue sign without the maple leaf, as suggested by Dan in the first reply? This is on an armoured car and is a painted sign, not a decal. I have shortlisted 8th Recce as a possiblity, due to the match with the blue.

Can't say I haven't see any without the maple leaf on it. Im sure it happened but the maple leaf was part of the marking. Lets just say it would be uncommon to see it without.
