Having returned recently from the battlefields & cemeteries of France & Belgium I thought I would post some photos for those on the bottom of the planet who live a long ways from there.

These are from the Australian WW1 cemetery at Fromelles.

Thanks for sharing these Bruce.

There are so many Australians from both wars buried in Europe, including my uncle, who is in the Kiel war cemetery. He was killed off the Dutch coast on the night of the Dam Busters raid attacking German shipping.

There was a good program on the ABC just before the news. It s a regular show but I cant remember the name of it.

Anyway, the host interviewed the fellow that started the investigation to find the poor blokes who died at Fromelles. After years of searching they found a mass grave at the edge of forest that was dug by the Germans after the battle to bury over 400 Australian soldiers.

GREAT PROGRAM! So important that we remember these fellahs. I was horrified to discover we lost over 2000 blokes in one night at Fromelles.

A few battalions simply ceased to exist. The true tragedy was brought home with a photo of one of the battalions in full dress uniform.

So thank you for posting Bruce. The program talked about the memorial statue in your first photo as well. Very moving.
