Hi - my first post as a member! - looking for markings, unit info etc. for a diorama of an Achilles sp gun in Canadian service, Northern Europe in WW2. Can anybody help please?

Hi Hanno, Sorry if you feel that we have missused the forum. In this case the info consisted of 4 pages of marking and unit info regarding the use of the Achilles by Canadian forces which could not have been shared on the forum. I can't answer for Mark, but I'm happy for anyone else to share the info.

Perhaps I should have thanked Mark by using a private message, but I'm new to this forum and applied the same rules that are used on others that I belong to. Appologies again.

Ok, thanks Geoff. As I am not the originator of this particular info. then obviously I can't decide how it's made available and to whom. I have no problem making any information that I have available to anyone else, providing that it can be done simply and without breaking copyright on published material.
Is there anyway that multiple pages can be viewed on this site?

One of my worries would be the copyright issue, for instance -following Dana Nields reply to this thread earlier I downloaded some useful markings for my own use, but could not then repost them or send them to others as I do not own the info or prints.

Hi Guys;

The reason I sent Dave the info I had put together for him by other means (e-mail), is simply that it was four pages long and contained 22 images and text, and has far as I know, on this forum, only one image can be posted at one time. To post it all in this format would have meant posting 22 separate posts alone, one for each image. End of story.

Sorry if I broke any rules or offended anyone, it was just that the size of my reply was to large for this means or format.

Regarding my post to Dave telling him I had sent it, well, yes, maybe I should have sent that by private message or by the forum e-mail option, but to tell you the truth, I'm still learning all the bells & whistles of the forums new format, I'll keep this in mind for future reference.

I will gladly e-mail a copy of what I sent to Dave, to anyone who wants it, just send me your e-mail address.

Thanks for the link to that great U'Carrier information.

I have reviewed the Carrier markings in Europe, and have a question for the group:

Why would the tow hook be painted white?:confused:

Was this a convoy marking thing, to prevent getting rear ended by another MV, or was it a tactical marking of some sort??

Hi Stewart,

I think we met outside of Vimy House one day, if memory serves correct.

I don't know for sure, but I'd fathom a guess and say that the hooks may have been painted white for visiblity reasons connected to the deep wadding kit. Best to drop Barry Beldam a line and ask him directly as I don't think he stops by here too often.

If I'm not mistaken, it had something to do with blackout drive or like you said, so you didn't get rear ended.

Even now many MFVs have white patches on their rear end for the same reason. As I found tryng to drive LandRovers and Abbots round Salisbury Plain in the dark the "convoy light" is darned near useless!

Mark, I did not realise you had such a wealth of information. It wasn't about breaking rules or offending anyone, but like Geoff said, it's just that we'd like to know too! :)

Yes, we did meet outside the repository of Canadian armour - what a small world it is!

I shall give Barry's book another glance, just to make sure the answer is not there, then I will drop him a line.
